When I first started working in Finance, I worked as a Finance Analyst for British Gas. I was about a year into my CIMA studies and had under a year of Finance experience. I had recently been transferred to a team that looks after the metering side of the business. The team consisted of a Head of Finance and 3 Finance Managers who were supported by 1-2 analysts each. Due to restructuring, there wasn’t a Finance Manager for me to report into, therefore, the Head of Finance offered me the opportunity to stand in for the Finance Manager whilst they recruited one. For about 6 months, I did my Finance Analyst role and took on most of the responsibilities of the Finance Manager. For someone with as little experience as me, this was somewhat a baptism of fire. However, I learned loads in a very short space of time and I felt that I fast tracked my career. By the end of it, I was confident enough to manage relationships with senior operational managers, lead a departmental budgeting process, deliver month end close and reporting and act as a business partner. Usually, these are skills that are learned later in a Finance career. I saw this post from Steven Bartlett over the weekend, which reminded me how much I grew as a result of that. Anyone who is trying to build a career or grow their business should take note. There is no experience as good as on the job training. The internet is awash with guidance and support to help you evolve. If you aren’t sure about whether you can do something, I would recommend just giving it a go and trying to figure it out. You may surprise yourself with the outcome… #careerprogression #ceo #founder #development
