In 2023, being a Video Editor was voted the second most stressful job in the United States. I began Video Editing as a teenager and I remember being so excited that would day I could be working on television or in movies. But 15 years later, after hundreds of Weddings and Corporate Videos, I stopped enjoying it as much. There’s something to be said for constructive criticism… But everyone… even if they’re not in the industry… has an opinion. And don’t get me wrong, you can have an opinion. Sometimes this is necessary. There are consequences for not speaking up. And I appreciate the opinions of others… … but after a while, it becomes mentally draining. And you stop valuing yourself. I remember one client yelled in my face many years ago because my colours were wrong —- spit flying from his face —- but he was colour blind. I remember an old employer telling me I was terrible and stupid … and then a week later his company went into liquidation because his company owed 400,000 in taxes. A photographer told me my videos didn’t make sense and that he could do better… and then two months later some random married couple approached me to re-edit their Wedding Video. Passionate Video Editors stay in the profession because it allows them to put a little of themselves in the video. But conversely, business is about doing things for others. The problem, however, is that the less of ourselves we put into the work, the more of our spark and creativity goes out the window. If you want to hire us to do make a creative piece in the exact way that you want it in your head, then you can go make it. We can’t read your mind. You hire us for our expressive take on what you want - because you value our take on the world. Video Editing is a visual language. I can speak for you, but I am not you. We valued your vision enough to craft the video. And there’s nothing more soul crushing than working on something that doesn’t mean anything. And when you make so many changes that it doesn’t even resemble what we had originally had in mind, it tells me, “We value the product but we don’t value you.”
you dont need a video editor,⚠️ If you are going to disrespect them! I see people hiring video editors and give just 300-400 rupees for one short form video and telling they need 2-3 videos perday. what they miss is thats its a time consuming job! A video editors time is consumed too much for the lowest pay in a way of disrespect to their time! These are mostly by the regional market. I think if a video editor's skill is drooped down to a very basic pay it is equivalent to the disrespect to the art form.

Valid point. I learned on Adobe's Premiere Pro and it's not easy. I also learned a very healthy respect for video editors. My personal preference is Sound Design to actually work with. Audition CC is simply easier for me to navigate, but I intend on building my skills. People don't realize the creativity that goes into a good edit. If you didn't film what you are editing, you have to work with what you get from the production team and sometimes it's crap and an editor still has to make it look good. They have to understand the vision of the production and put together the story that people see. Most people think of a director, writer, cinematographers, when enjoying a film or show, or even a music video. But these people provide the pieces of the puzzle. It's the editor who puts it together to create the story that you see. If you work with great people with a great vision, you can put together a great edit and showcase a wonderful story, but if you're working with shit, you have to work harder as an editor to create something wonderful and not enough appreciation goes to the teams on Post Production. Editors deserve more.
