There are 2 separate union issue happening at Canada West Coast a. TCRC breakdown in negotiation with CN and CPCK (rail companies), highly likely CIRB will issue findings that strike by TCRC will not impact critical services; TCRC is already proceeding with strike vote (due 29 Jun) to ensure they could call for strike (w 72 hrs prior notice) in Jul 2024. The current strike mandate is valid till 30 Jun 2024. b. ILWU Local Chapter 514 refuse to accept BCMEA final offer and vote to strike was completed on 15 Jun 2024; The impact will be more pinpoint to DP World Vancouver Centerm terminal. This will take some time to play out as CIRB is call to intervene in the negotiation. All in all, eventful summer peak is coming ... As any disruption to PNW will be felt by PSW, adding onto the lack of progress on US East Coast/Gulf Coast between ILA and USMX. Plus resumption of Red Sea conflict in the background.

CBSA STRIKE At, Cargo Partners International Inc, we are very hopeful that strike which was anticipated to begin tomorrow will not take place. Reality is, the clock is ticking and the Liberal government needs to revisit current contracts “Although supply chain disruptions at any time are not a good thing, the current timing of this potential border disruption is particularly problematic as trucking continues to grapple with ongoing volatility throughout the sector – including significant retirements and loss of labor/capital productivity because of federal legislation governing sick days.”cit The border delays will have an impact to crucial sectors such as automotive and others dependent on just-in-time delivery systems, it could jeopardize thousands of Canadian jobs. CBSA spokesperson, Luke Reimer, said that while the agency respects the Charter-protected right of employees to strike and to participate in lawful activities associated with collective bargaining, the border will ‘remain open and safe’. “Ninety percent of all frontline border services officers are essential workers. It is a waiting game to see the outcome if such strike, will take place.”

Valuable analysis from Sea-Intelligence: If East Coast ports have 13% excess capacity over the normal flow of 2.3 million TEUs in October, it would take 6 days to clear the backlog from 1 day of strike. If the ports have “a little more“ excess capacity, this would bring this down to 4-5 days. In this senario, a 1-week strike in the beginning of October, would not be cleared until mid-November. If we get a 2-week strike, the ports would not be back to normal operations until 2025!

UNDER-THE-RADAR IRONY ALERT Last May the Ontario Superior Court overturned legislation from 2011 that had declared Toronto transit an essential service and took away TTC workers' right to strike. This year, we all — including those who never actually ride transit — are likely to get a great reminder of just how essential public transit is. ATU Local 113 and CUPE 2 have TTC contracts that expire this month. (CUPE gave its bargaining team a 99.3% strike mandate last month.) Let's hope things can be resolved without chaos. Let's also hope we learn lessons for managing the services better in a new labour-relations environment.

The two-day transit strike impacted businesses across the region as 300,000 people who depend on the bus and SeaBus were left stranded, not being able to get to and from work and move effectively around the region. We welcome Mr. Ready’s appointment. His credentials are well demonstrated, and the appointment conveys the seriousness of the dispute’s economic impact. The proposed and expanded 72-hour strike by CUPE 4500 would be catastrophic to our regional economy. We urge both parties to find an agreement that restores confidence in our transit system and protects the long-term financial viability of transit services in the region. https://lnkd.in/gshyW5J3

ILA locals prepping for coordinated strike at US East, Gulf coast ports The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) has appointed local vice presidents to lead committees for potential strike actions at East and Gulf coast ports if a new contract isn't secured by the end of the month. Union leadership indicated they remain far from agreement on key issues like wages and automation. The ILA is pushing for a 78% wage increase, while employers, represented by the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), are offering about half that. The union also seeks stronger protections against terminal automation and an expanded work jurisdiction beyond port facilities. No further talks are scheduled. #ILAStrike #PortNegotiations #LaborUnion #EastCoastPorts #GulfCoastPorts #USMX #WageNegotiations #AutomationDebate #Longshoremen #MaritimeIndustry Stay Informed: https://lnkd.in/ejUhR28n

RE: ILA threat of a dockworker strike at East/Gulf Coast ports starting Oct. 1, 2024, it’s just rhetoric at this point, but concerns over the potential for port strikes have affected container flows in the past, and it might happen again. And the timing, while coincidental, is politically interesting. That’s a little over a month before Election Day. See story: https://lnkd.in/e5SnEWAi
