It all started in 2014 when a group of UCF students committed to use their knowledge for impact. Through the power of teamwork and ingenuity, the students produced a 3D-printed bionic arm for a child living with a limb difference to give the child a new sense of hope and confidence. But, their work didn’t stop there. After witnessing the way the bionic arm shaped the child’s personal identity, the students made a life-changing decision: their mission would be to empower others through accessibility technology. Ten years later, the same students have donated 40 bionic arms to children with the help of over 160 University of Central Florida interns and five full-time staff members. What started as an idea at a kitchen table has transformed into an innovative research facility called Limbitless Solutions. Limbitless Solutions, a nonprofit direct support organization at UCF, works to empower individuals and increase accessibility through interdisciplinary teamwork and expressive technology. Giving every student access to an excursion at the Discovery Centre is incredibly important to us at Scitech. This is why, with our first ever fundraising appeal, we want to double the number of disadvantaged school students that can attend Scitech for free next financial year through our School Access Program. A Scitech excursion is a hugely valuable experience for students as it gets them interacting with science in a way that isn’t possible in the classroom. Through Scitech’s immersive and tangible experiences, students become active participants in their science learning. This allows them to create core memories and positive associations with science topics that can lead to them retain what they learnt and develop an ongoing interest in science long after their visit. Feynman School - Where curiosity and character know no bounds! Even in the year 2023, old myths about academically gifted children continue to impact classrooms near and far. There are school administrators who deny the very existence of these children. They may argue, instead, that there are only “pushy parents,” or offer such advice as “all kids even out by the third grade.” The truth is that there are children capable of producing work far beyond their years, and research has shown that if their intellectual and social-emotional needs are not met, they will experience immeasurable suffering. Since 2010, talented DC-area students from all socioeconomic backgrounds have had a learning environment where they can thrive at their own pace. A school where curiosity and character know no bounds. A school that nurtures the heart and the mind. Feynman School These curious-minded, creative children—our greatest resource—deserve a setting in which they can demonstrate their talents and interests without apology. Nurturing young talent is the key to solving intractable problems in the environment, energy, defense, and medicine. Yet schools like Feynman are not a priority for government funding. And that is why:  We ask during this Season of Giving that you considet making Feynman School a priority. One of my favorite stories of 2023: A 5th & 6th grade class raised $700,000+ to build a wheelchair accessible playground at their school. Here's the story 👇 At Glen Lake Elementary School in Minnesota, there are 460 students. 9 students use a wheelchair — including the son of Betsy Julien, a 5th & 6th grade teacher at the school. Over time, Betsy realized that the school’s playground was not inclusive for the students who use wheelchairs. She wrote a grant application for the school to purchase one wheelchair accessible swing — and received $35,000. But that only covered a portion of the one swing’s cost... So, Betsy showed the check to her class of 5th & 6th graders — and asked if they wanted to help raise another $35,000 just to purchase that one swing. And that's when a student asked a question that's forever changed the lives of everyone at Glen Lake Elementary School. "Why aren't we doing the whole playground?" From there, Betsy seamlessly integrated the fundraising project into lesson plans and the 25 students rallied together. The students: - Organized into teams - Set short & long-term goals - Cold called local businesses - & more! Now, Betsy's class of 5th & 6th graders have raised over $700,000. All so their friends who use wheelchairs can enjoy recess too! But they aren't stopping there... They want to help other schools in their district & across the US raise money to build wheelchair accessible playgrounds. It's Spring. It's Monday. It's Solar Eclipse day. Most importantly though - It is the day WITS kicks off our campaign to give books to students and teachers. This year I am joined by mentors, colleagues and volunteers on TEAM LEARN ACADEMY. Our Team this year has a goal of raising $14,000 to ensure that the students of LEARN have their very own books for the summer and every day that comes after.  You can help us reach our goal by donating to my page here. https://lnkd.in/ep_sJwDP I have been doing this for nearly a decade now. Everyday I think about reading. I know that likely most of you don't. Yes, you read, everyday, probably a lot of the moments of your day involve reading - but you probably don't really think about it. Yet, 56% of adults in America are functionally illiterate, not able to comprehend text above a 6th grade level. For comparison, most American newspapers are written at an 11th grade level. WITS programs are uniquely designed as a preventative measure to that statistic. We work with youth at the critical early elementary ages to ensure strong habits and positive relationships to reading and learning that provide the foundation for all future learning. The WITS Summer Books campaign raises funds that directly support the purchase and distribution of over 22,000 books to teachers and students. The data and research are clear – children who have access to print reading materials have better literacy outcomes. Join me!
