Two weeks ago LLaMa 3 was published; Today, Llama-3-8B-Instruct has been downloaded nearly 900K times, and through open source innovation, runs on your Mac (Ollama) and offers a 1 million token context. This is just mindblowing! Imaging the speed of innovation, and the number of patient life's we could safe if we would replicate this in the healthcare domain? A ONE million token context is more text an average general practitioner documents a year. In a few years we will have even more capable models, that have a context window that allows you to input all the documentation a general practitioner documents in a lifetime. Will in 5 yrs medical records systems be replaced by AI systems? When this trend continuous it really feels like AI is going to eat software.

Google introduced AMIE, an AI-based medical conversation system, that scored as well or better than physicians, not only in diagnostic accuracy but also in empathy! It’s an LLM-based system, functioning exclusively through a text chat interface. So it’s an unrealistic comparison to actual patient-clinician interactions, but results like these definitely got my attention. The most important part is the graph below, which shows how a clinician using AMIE is more accurate in diagnosing complex cases than a clinician with search only, or with no assistance. That’s huge. It’s not about robots replacing humans. It’s about tools that help medicine become more human.
