We are often asked what is a ‘breathing pattern disorder’ and it is essentially a disruption to the normal pattern and mechanics of breathing, resulting in intermittent or chronic symptoms. Breathing Pattern Disorders (BPD) were first acknowledged in the medical literature in 1871 in civil war soldiers (DaCosta), but it took almost 60 years for symptoms to be defined as being attributed to over-breathing (Kerr 1938). While over-breathing is only one part of BPD, to this day there is still no formal definition, and no gold standard diagnostic method of BPD. As a result, signs and symptoms are readily misinterpreted by both patients and clinicians, leading to prescriptions of medications that are neither required nor effective (Morgan 2002). BPD is under-recognised, under or mis-diagnosed, and therefore is often not properly treated. Do you know how to recognise it?
