What can Blue's Clues teach us about instructional design? In a session with one of my mentees today, we talked about learner engagement strategies in text and video content. Blue's Clues is an educational show designed for children. The show has great animations and visual elements. However, when analyzing a 1.5 min clip, we found the strategies that engaged us the most were: - Questioning, - Building on prior knowledge, - Analysis, - Problem-solving, - Making predictions, and - Alignment with the learning objectives My mentee's aha? These are engagement strategies you can use in practically any platform or medium. The most important part of instructional design is not the tools but effective learning design.

Blue's Clues brilliantly highlights learner engagement transcends mediums. Emphasizing questioning & problem-solving applies universally in educational design. 👍

I haven’t watched Blue’s Clues in a long time, but I’m wondering if there’s also a storytelling element there that helps engage the audience.

Yes!! I recall Malcolm Gladwell having a chapter about Blue’s Clues, in regards to the “stickiness factor”! I’ve got to reread that one. Thank you for reminding me and highlighting the importance of design

Always fantastic when you can find those non-traditional exemplars. Nicely done
