FOLLOW THE MONEY AGAIN – MORE imec.xpand INVESTMENTS IN MEDTECH & LIFE SCIENCES TO DISCUSS. In the run-up to the Optica Global Photonics Economic Forum on October 1-2, 2024, (more info here: https://lnkd.in/ddAx2G2A) we are sharing some more investor-related interviews made during the recent imec ITF2024. If you are a running a med-tech startup, you should definitely watch today’s interview! I feel that medtech (in Europe at least) could do with a push. There are lots of startups with very good ideas. But I remember Fokko Pieter Wieringa from imec the Netherlands (busy with developing the artificial kidney) explaining to me that medical startups have two valleys of death – first funding the prototype, then finding a system integrator to help fund the clinical trials. It can take decades! He also pointed out that many startups spend too long convincing doctors and surgeons they have a winner. But the doctors don’t buy their products. Seek support instead from those who will buy your machines, who will pay for it (insurance companies?) and patient organisations that may help support your quest for #FDA approval. As well as keynote speakers in Antwerp last week, we were eager to talk with imec.xpand, to understand how they interact with startups and scaleups in 7 European countries plus the US and beyond. They recently announced a new fund of 300 million Euro. So, in the second half of our chat with imec.xpand, co-founder Peter Vanbekbergen we discussed the following companies. Azalea Vision, Axithra, Nagi Bioscience, and Morrow Eyewear (including an interview we made a while back with Jelle De Smet CTO of Morrow at their first launch – in 2024 they are entering the commercial market with autofocal glasses. I also made reference to an excellent talk given by Gosia Jurczak, MD Lam Research at imec who gave one of the most interesting presentations on the first day (ITF World). Not sure if it was recorded. We’re also delighted that imec president Luc Van den hove will give a keynote at our Forum in Malaga, where we hope to learn about imec’s plans for manufacturing in that part of southern Spain. 🔔 AZmed secured €15 Million in Series A Funding! 🔔 'The future of medical imaging with artificial intelligence' 💰 AZmed, a leading European MedTech startup has secured €15M in Series A funding from investors such as Maison Worms, Techstars and Teampact.ventures. 📈 In 2019, AZmed's AI software became the first ever to obtain CE marking for fracture detection on X-rays. It then obtained FDA clearance in 2022 and has been implemented in over 1000 healthcare facilities across 40 countries! 🏥 The funding will support AZmed ambitions of shaping the future of medical imaging with artificial intelligence by accelerating the works flows of radiologists! 🌍 They will also strengthen its leadership in Europe and extends its operations on a global scale, including the US, Middle East, Africa and Asia. 🇫🇷 (1/2) France is Investing in Biotech Innovation: Last week, I attended Viva Technology 2024 and discovered that France represented more biotech-based startups than any other country. Let’s dive into the CNRS - Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) stand, one of the biggest scientific institutions in French research: Biomemory TECH: DNA-based data storage. Their innovative approach leverages the long-term stability and high density of DNA to store vast amounts of data. The process is sustainable, significantly reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional data storage methods such as magnetic tapes. BUSINESS: In 2022, they raised €5M in a seed round, attracting several big investors. Their aim is to commercialize their DNA data storage solutions by focusing on reducing costs and improving technology scalability. By optimizing their product, they expect to have a cost-competitive solution with traditional storage methods within the next few years. Vect-Horus TECH: Peptide-based vectors for drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Their technology enables more effective delivery of therapeutic agents to targeted tissues, enhancing the efficacy and safety of treatments. BUSINESS: The company's plan focuses on advancing their drug delivery technology through preclinical and clinical stages. They have already licensed one of their technologies to Novo Nordisk but still have candidates to pursue with in-house development. France seems to be committed to biotech innovation, and I am excited to see how these startups will shape the future of healthcare and technology.
