Working on Diversity and Inclusion in a corporate setting always makes me wonder, what could it be like if this work was already done at a school going level? Showing kids and parents the benefits of sharing a space with others is not just important but also necessary. My kids are going to an all-Irish school aka gaelscoil as I wanted to make sure they are aware of their Irish roots and heritage. This also unfortunately meant missing the multi-cultural influences of being with kids from other backgrounds. Luckily, they do have me as there as the gateway to teaching them consciously about the many aspects of the ever growing Irish society with the growing many cultural aspects of life. But what if you grow up in a surrounding where this information is not nurtured… Last year my eldest got a new teacher. She said to me “he is brown like me”. And I was surprised as you do not find many brown or black people in the Irish speaking community. So I questioned her several times on this. Until I met him, and yes he definitely looked brown and on further research found out he has Egyptian ancestral linkage on his father’s side. For my daughter to have a teacher who “looks like her” has been a major influence. Not something she would understand now. But I know “you can not believe to be it, if you don’t see it”. Many of us know that any change in Irish society has come fast and hard. So much change in women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and the growing group of people bringing diversity in all aspects of Irish society. Change is scary, I will never deny this. But change is also needed to keep a society evolving. Refusing and condemning this keeps a nation small in many ways. Ireland has always been the nation of wanting better in life and fighting for their rights. This is why I felt so strongly connected to this Emerald Isle. The overlapping points with black history are clear too. Maybe some have forgotten this or are unaware. And that brings it back to education. And where is best to start with that…. Why not start them young! Muinteoir Chukwurah please keep doing what you are doing. Be that change and teach them along the way. The Irish educational system needs you. The kids need you ❤️
Some hate comments to this aspiring primary school teacher of African heritage includes: "So you think the Irish people should tolerate African invasion. "Irish people will become a minority in 2050 in their own country because you people keep going there" "Africa needs primary school teachers badly.. Very badly " Learning Irish, doesn't make you Irish" "Go back to Nigeria"

Outlook for the Pacific region
I'm very proud to have worked on the The World Bank's latest #PacificEconomicUpdate in Samoa last week, especially with its special focus on education. The Pacific's greatest asset and resource is its people - but in most Pacific Island countries, more than half of 10-year-olds do not meet international benchmarks in reading. This is improving, but progress is slow. For lasting poverty reduction there needs to be a sustained focus on the quality of education and better support for teachers across the Pacific. This includes better training and more instruction for Pacific children in their first language. You can see more here: http://wrld.bg/xE0850QM8eY Huge congrats to Vika Waradi Reshika Singh Ekaterine Vashakmadze Tom Perry Lars Sondergaard Ruth Nikijuluw and David Gould.

Joined in on a webinar titled “Disrupting Colonial Legacies of Education in Africa”organized by Liberation Alliance Africa with Itunu Omolara Oriye as the moderator. Panelists were Baraka Muazu and Dr Hadiza Kere Abdulrahman. It was a thought provoking, relearning and unlearning experience/opportunity as we pondered through the concept and components of the Africanization of Knowledge. Here are some questions that were discussed. What is knowledge and who is responsible for what is valid and valued as knowledge How do we see beyond what has been taught/shown to us Who shapes the knowledge landscape How do we address the inferiority of African knowledge How do we address the issue of talent and abilities being perceived, framed and navigated through “the whiteness “ lens How do we mitigate playing constantly to someone else’s ideals Are we able to move from coloniality to critical consciousness/awareness There is more to knowledge than what we have learned and have been exposed to. We need to reclaim our indigenous knowledge spaces and as we do this, we need to recognize that systems of oppression do not go down without a fight/struggle and the self is the first site for liberation. #Africa #AfricanWoman #AfricanKnowledge #AfricanUnion African Union #EqualityNow #Roots

❗ Experts of the Organization for #Security and #Cooperation in #Europe note that #russia has violated a number of #international #law by deporting and forcibly transferring #Ukrainianchildren. In particular, such actions of the #russianfederation “may contain elements of a crime against humanity,” namely, “#deportation or forced displacement of the population.” ❗ The organization also emphasizes numerous violations of children's rights, including the right to #identity, #family, #education, access to information, rest, leisure and participation in cultural life and the arts, as well as the right to thought, conscience and religion, #health, #freedom and #security. ❗ Children also receive so-called “#patriotic #education” by force. They are forced to sing the #russian national anthem, attend #history lessons, during which children are told that #Ukraine “has always been part of #russia, and its rightful place is to be part of the #russianfederation.” ❗ In some regions, children are forced to join youth organizations - #military-patriotic clubs in different cities. In particular, #Tatarstan official Leila Fazleyeva noted in August 2022 that “all camps are aimed at patriotic education of #young people, #development of communication skills and preservation of cultural heritage.” #russiaisaterroriststate #HelpUkrainianChildren #ReturnUkrainianchildren #StandWithUkraine #socialmedia #healthcare #StandWithUkraine #peace #HelpingHand #opportunities #GettingThingsDone #stopwarinukraine #stoprussia #stopputin
