During Black History Month, we honor the enduring struggles and remarkable achievements of African Americans throughout history. This period also prompts us to contemplate the ongoing quest for equality and justice for all. This month, we celebrate the profound influence of African Americans on the arts, recognizing their creativity, resilience, and innovation that have enriched our culture and inspired successive generations. Let's pay homage to their legacy by amplifying diverse voices and fostering inclusive spaces for artistic expression. In observance of Black History Month, our colleagues at Element Materials Technology will engage in local discussions, collaborative learning, and introspection regarding the collective responsibility we bear in forging a world that is fair and equitable for everyone. As Carter Godwin Woodson astutely noted in "The Mis-Education of the Negro," history demonstrates that regardless of shifts in power or revolutionary movements, those who rely solely on others without learning to be self-sufficient ultimately fail to secure additional rights or privileges. I look forward to an exciting month ahead 💙 #BlackHistoryMonth #Equality #Justice #AfricanAmericanArt #DiverseVoices #BHM #BlackExcellence #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackCulture #BlackPride #BlackLeadership #BlackAchievement #CivilRights #Equality #Justice #DiverseVoices #Inclusion #CelebratingBlackHistory #BlackLegacy #HistoricalHeroes #InspiringBlackLeaders #RememberingOurRoots #Empowerment #UnityThroughDiversity

Take the time to read this post.
Ive co-edited a book on #whitesaviorism in #internationaldevelopment which includes how #brown and #black people imitate their white counterparts. So I warrant I know a thing or two about how it works. But even with all the support to mobilize against white saviorism, everyone still wants to BE a saviour. Everyone. Ive noticed this a lot recently. Particularly in the sphere of #systemschange and #transformation, two more buzzwords to add to our ever-growing list of buzzwords in #globaldevelopment. The discourse (which includes myself) on giving power "back" to brown, black and #indigenous peoples, giving more financial autonomy to the #globalsouth and dismantling systems of #colonialism all reek of saviorism. When someone says that the systems needs to change, it can also be read as, "we need to save everyone from the existing structures of colonialism/post colonialism". Ive come across many who ask "are there any examples of organizations who have decolonized themselves in the #globalsouth?" Hell yes! I wrote a whole book Chapter on this! With examples! Just look/research a little will you? Countries are not just waiting for you to come and tell you it's now "safe" to come out and do your own thing. Everyone knows that. "What can we do to dismantle structures of power?" ask the transformation movement people ad nauseam. Well, why dont you just take one country, any country and delve a little deeper into their society and structures and you will find, that they are doing just fine in dismantling what they think needs to be dismantled. In your eagerness to "transform" the system, have you even bothered to ask if that's what they want? Also what system exactly do they want "transformed"? Is it the same one you think needs to be? Probably not. The entire "decolonization" industry is itself one of saviorism. Where it's now simply assumed that the global south needs saving from the global north. Ive always said that there are many issues facing both the former and the latter and each has to figure that out for themselves. But this growing desire to extricate the #south from the perils of #colonialism is becoming not just an issue of whitesaviorism, but non-white saviorism as well, in that non-white peoples also feel that they need "allies" in the global North to save their people from the tyranny of the West. This could not be further from the truth and is a dangerous trend. The sector piles up on mounds of unusable research every year, but it still doesn't want to make the effort to find examples of people who in their everyday lives are already fighting tyranny, without your help. There are several who are not taking your foreign funding, technical support or advice to change the way things work. I did research on my own country #Pakistan to come up with such examples. Maybe you should too. No one needs to be "saved". Even the #Palestinians or the #Sudanese dont need "saving". They need justice. So dont try and be a saviour. Of any colour.
