You may think that time tracking is reserved for freelancers and billable talent, but it’s been a game-changer to my work as a founder. I often have competing priorities in my head, which range from 🏃 Divisional day-to-day ⚾️ Divisional new initiatives 💡 New projects (ventures, advising, etc.) 🏠 Personal life (i.e. home renos) At the beginning of the week, I try to set a goal of how much time I want to spend on each of these areas. I’ll debrief at the end of the week to see if it was accurate, how I felt, and if anything needs changing. This has helped to uncover insights like: ❌ I spend too much time on day-to-day tasks that I don’t enjoy 😮💨 I’m not giving enough attention to creative (non-work) activities ✅ I’d free up X time by letting go of a specific project Everyone knows that being a founder is a marathon, not a sprint. I'll be the first to admit that spending 40 hours on work I don't enjoy feels wayyyyy more taxing than 70-80 hours on work I'm excited by. What I've found most interesting is the contrast between doing 'work' and the headspace that it takes... The below screenshot was from a fairly intense week (long days / evenings, some weekend) but I still tracked <40 hours. Things like context switching, small distractions, and procrastination between tasks bumps this number up. My take? The average 40 hour work week is more like 20-25 hours of work. You are, however, getting full headspace from that person and that can be a lot more valuable than the hours they're putting in! (great POV if hiring for full-time) As a final fun fact, I use Toggl religiously but haven't needed the paid tier for years. What does your setup look like? OLD SCHOOL OFFICE PERKS: - Baristas - “Unlimited vacation days” - Game room - Snack room - Free meals (to keep you there) - Nap pods (remember this one?) - Fancy offices THE PERKS WE REALLY WANT TODAY: - Ability to work remotely - Don’t shame me for family time. In fact, embrace that part of who I am (better healthcare, child care, etc) - It can wait until tomorrow (or Monday) - Vacation is actually vacation - Don’t need to report all of my life to you (doctor, kids issues, dentist, etc) - Trust me to get my work done The foundation of a great business is built on respect and trust, and those are really the only “perks” people want. Respect that we all are multidimensional and have lives and interests beyond what we do for a living. Founders live and breathe their business, but everyone else isn’t in that same bucket. Respect that. Trust that the people you bring along with you to build are the best of the best. YOU hired them. Give them the space and freedom to excel wherever and however they need. If they fail, teach them. Unpopular opinion: work hard, but don’t hustle. A better approach? Chill work. This idea kicked off at SparkToro with Amanda Natividad and Rand Fishkin. It’s all about appreciating quality work without letting it take over your life and balancing work and free time. Because too much of either can make you unhappy. It goes against the hustle culture… and some countries' mindset, too. The common belief is that success comes solely from hard work, and those who work hard deserve all the rewards. I’ve been there myself, caught up in it at some point on my journey. Those long hours, late nights, and tons of meaningless work take a toll on your physical and mental health. But there’s another way to succeed. As someone who’s always pushed for high performance, it took me a while to realize that. I totally get the idea of “chill work.” It’s about embracing a different set of beliefs: ✨ Life isn’t just about work ✨ Trust and respect boundaries ✨ Focus on outcomes over input ✨ Prioritize quality over quantity ✨ Prioritize customers, team, community, and finally, investors Chill work leads to better decision-making, prioritization, results, and a better life. Day 86/365 of Building Saas: The Myth of Work-Life Balance for Entrepreneurs As an entrepreneur, the concept of work-life balance often feels like a distant dream. Here's why: 24/7 Commitment: Entrepreneurship demands a level of commitment that goes beyond the typical 9-5. From brainstorming sessions at odd hours to handling emergencies on weekends, the entrepreneurial journey is relentless. Multiple Hats, One Head: As an entrepreneur, you wear multiple hats – CEO, marketer, salesperson, customer service, and sometimes even janitor! Balancing these roles often leaves little room for a traditional work-life separation. Personal Investment: Unlike regular jobs, the success and failure of a venture are deeply personal. The emotional and financial stakes are high, making it hard to "switch off" after office hours. Continuous Learning and Adaptation: The fast-paced nature of the entrepreneurial ecosystem requires continuous learning and adaptation. Keeping up with industry trends, new technologies, and market demands requires time and effort beyond regular working hours.

Nobody is publicly open about how lonely being a founder is. Online, you will see founders’ success stories of raising millions, building a brilliant business, and exiting for more. But that’s not what being a founder is. Founders are among the loneliest people I know. They don’t feel they can speak to their management team, shareholders, or staff. They sit at the centre of what is often a complex paradox they are trying to unravel while managing runway, clients, investors, and employees. That makes it lonely. I mean incredibly lonely. The average founder journey these days is 5-7 years (If you’ve done well!). Seven years is a long time to be driving a ship solo through the stormiest waters one day and then the calmest the next. If we are honest, the split is probably 80% stormy and 20% calm. I’ve learnt the hard way how important it is to look after yourself, which feels impossible in the start-up world where you are time-starved, and the culture demands work 24/7. That leads to stress and burnout, in my experience. I tell all the founders I consult to take time out and protect themselves. Spend that time undertaking mindful activities, whether that's gardening, renovating a piece of furniture, or painting a wall. That time will allow you to passively process the big strategic questions you face every day. It can be difficult for those who are deeply involved in the weeds of running a business, but you need that time ‘out’ the business whilst still being ‘in’it . Do you take time out of your business?
