Digital’s exponential growth 📈 What were you doing in 2015? Back then, I recall proposing to management the move to go mobile-first 📱and moments-led 🛍️🏡🍽️ which means building new capabilities on the app, (rather than the desktop) and personalising marketing messages (instead of segment-based blasts). Those were early days and the size of our digital teams back then was only a handful. Fast forward to 2023. All incumbent banks have revamped their mobile apps to be at par, or even better than the pure play digital banks. Payments and lending models have been disrupted to be more real-time and lifestyle specific. The conversation in the fintech space has now moved to Artificial Intelligence 🤖 and into new areas previously under-invested in digital such as Risk & Controls and system resilience. 📈 Exponential growth starts with 1️⃣Digitisation. In the early stages, the impact isn’t felt, hence why it is called 2️⃣Deception. As momentum picks-up and business models get challenged, 3️⃣Disruption occurs at an exponential speed 🏎️. GenAI 👩💻 As more data gets digitised, the data breadcrumbs can trace out decisions and activities of every individual. The scale of data now available enables detection of formerly unseen patterns. As a practitioner, I am excited to apply the techniques of digital marketing which has been perfected in the last decade into how banks can catch-up their surveillance in the regulatory space. We will use AI to deter, detect and disrupt the bad actors. The current headline Money Laundering 💰case amplifies the need for us to do this faster. Which brings me back to this week’s #throwbackfriday reflections from Singapore’s Fintech Festival where AI took centre stage. Thank you Singapore 🇸🇬 for planting the seed back in 2015. SFF has grown to be the global powerhouse 🌏event where like-minded people come together, exchange ideas and solve real world issues. And yes, the digital & technology word count of Ravi Menon’s speech is indeed validation of this transformation.
