Today I've got my NHS sustainability hat on at GHASPcon 🌱 Just hearing from Jonny Groome with 3 big headlines on what we can all do: 💰 Money - not only moving our own money to banks that don't fund fossil fuels but asking every supplier and rep we come across on their company divestment policy. Signal the demand and vote with your money. ⛽ Renewable energy - switch today and help fund new projects. 🥗 Eat more plants and change menus by behavioural nudges - making plant-based food appealing, not advertising it as vegan or plant based and making meat an optional add-on. Interesting line up at todays DPTC - Dairy Processing Technology Centre summit. Irelands dairy sector has come a long way in the last 50 years from when whey was a by-product fed to pigs. Now, through innovation, technology, and valorization, whey is processed, extracting value, helping Ireland become the home to some of the world’s best sports and clinical nutrition products. Projects like Circular Bioeconomy Research Group (CIRCBIO)s grass biorefinery at #FarmZeroC represent new technology with significant potential to add value for farmers while also addressing climate issues. Biorefining grass allows value to be extracted from grass while also having a press cake to feed to livestock.
🚀 Up next at the the DPTC Circular Dairy Summit: “Unlocking Potential: Policy Support for the Dairy Sector in the Circular Economy” panel discussion! This session will explore how strategic policies can unlock new opportunities, drive innovation, and promote sustainability within the dairy industry. Our panelists include: Conor Mulvihill, Director, Dairy Industry Ireland Geraldine Kearney FPRII, Renewable Gas Forum Ireland (RGFI) Professor @JJ Leahy, Chemical Sciences, University of Limerick Matthew Halpin, Bioeconomy Development and Implementation Group, DAFM / Irish Bioeconomy Forum Dr. Keristena G.rewan, Head of ESG Reporting, Ornua Looking forward to their insights on maximising the sector’s potential! #DPTCSummit #PolicySupport #Sustainability #DairyInnovation

Well done Anne Marie Henihan DPTC - Dairy Processing Technology Centre and Conor Mulvihill on yesterday. The consensus yesterday was clear: it’s time to transition from “vision” to “execution” for the circular bioeconomy - and specifically on biomethane. Everyone agrees that for this opportunity to be fully realised, a collaborative approach to R&D is essential. Universities, dairy producers, biomethane technology providers, and government will need to work closely to develop and add value to the by-products of biomethane production. There was also broad agreement on the need for education and public awareness to demonstrate how biomethane production integrates with dairy and other farm operations in a closed-loop system, extending benefits beyond energy to include biofertiliser and biogenic CO₂. Last weekend at our local farmer's market, I couldn't help but notice the abundance of signs like "organically grown," "No GMOs," and "Local Farm." It's clear that consumers are increasingly aware of where their food comes from and the environmental impact of its production. This consciousness is a testament to how far we've come in prioritizing sustainability in our daily food choices. Reflecting on this, I see a strong parallel in the decarbonization sector where we strive to increase the "yield" of organically "grown" electricity through sources like solar and wind. Just as we value "locally farmed" produce, the energy sector is moving towards "locally farmed" electricity with the development of microgrids and DERs. And in our quest for purity, just like the demand for "non-GMO" products, we pursue renewable energy sources, our version of "non-GMO" electricity and shift to electrifying all the things. As we continue to make choices about the energy we use, let’s draw inspiration from the farmer's market. Let’s choose sustainable, low-impact energy sources that not only power our homes but also protect our planet. Here's to making informed choices that ensure a healthier, more sustainable world for generations to come.
