Getting Ready to Make a Difference: Introducing the Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care

Maybe for now, let’s emphasize the importance of safeguarding children by fostering healthy family dynamics. After all, many of the challenges children face often stem from the actions of adults, particularly their parents. By shielding them from toxic and abusive situations, as well as the emotional distress that can come from events like divorce, we can create a more supportive environment for their growth and well-being. Fostering healthy family relationships is key to helping children grow into resilient individuals. We need to create a safe, nurturing environment where every child feels valued, with adults modeling positive behaviors to support their development. How can we, as a society, insist that every child deserves a nurturing environment? What real steps are we going to take to hold adults accountable for the way their actions affect children's well-being? Note to self: Every child needs a caring adult who believes in them and supports their growth. Keeping kids safe from harm is a responsibility we all share, not just parents. It’s up to our community to step up and protect the next generation. Today marks the beginning of ongoing training and support that I will be providing to the Moray Fostering, Adoption and Kinship Care Team. We are embarking on a comprehensive programme of training, group coaching and 1 to 1 consultations for staff, foster carers, kinship carers and adopters. There is so much to unpick and understand when working with and caring for children and young people impacted by developmental trauma, it's a big deal and it's complicated. It is an absolute privilege to be entrusted with such and important task of supporting those who give so much, in order to change the life trajectory of others. We will be looking through the developmental lens, changing the narrative of 'fix the behaviour, fix the child'. Through connection, intentional interactions, explicit routines and a greater understanding of what is going on beneath behaviour, we will begin to strengthen self-regulation, a core capability essential to regulate stress responses, think creatively and solve problems.

On Fridays I chair Norfolk's Children's Integrated Provision Panel, giving me a rare opportunity to take a step back from my strategic work and hear the stories and experiences of young people. Today, I was reminded of the power of kindness and compassion in our field. Amidst the complexities of children's situations and systems, it's can become easy to overlook their wants and needs. We can become hyper-focused on risks and keeping them safe, forgetting they are children that also need to learn and have fun. Sometimes, they don't neatly fit into our services and fall through gaps. The support children need isn't always clear and as professionals we can feel stuck or even frustrated that we don't know how to help. However, taking a moment to empathise, to truly listen to the child’s voice, can make a world of difference. It's essential to remember: it's the systems that are complex, not the children.
