3X The circular economy has reached megatrend status. The volume of discussions, debates and articles on the concept has almost tripled over the past five years. -21% But global circularity is still in decline. The share of secondary materials consumed by the global economy has decreased from 9.1% in 2018 to 7.2% in 2023—a 21% drop over the course of five years. 28% And consumption continues to accelerate. In the same period, we have consumed over 500 gigatonnes. That's 28% of all the materials humanity has consumed since 1900. What is driving circular economy solutions? According to the European Investment Bank, 100 billion tonnes of material is being consumed each year globally, with over 90% of this material being wasted. This situation poses an urgent need to pursue recycling of material, i.e., circular economy solutions where end-of-life material can be used to produced new output. Thus, there is a greater focus on how resources can be efficiently utilized and recovered during the material's life cycle (Circular economy). There are three main drivers that could further drive growth in circular economy solutions: 1. Critical material crisis A projected scarcity of critical materials, driven by highly capital-intensive markets such as EV production and technologies, can further put increased focused on recovery of critical materials, thus requiring circular economy solutions. 2. Net Zero Circular economy solutions are needed to achieve net zero transitions. According to Ellen MacArthur Foundation, while renewables reduce global GHG emissions by 55%, circular economy is crucial to address the remaining 45%, given that resource extraction, material handling contributes directly to emissions. 3. Global regulations Over the past few years, regulators have increasingly been focusing on circular economy integration into businesses. Regulations such as EcoLabels, 'End of Life Vehicle Derivative', and 'Packaging Derivative' include mandates for businesses to include circularity into the industrial value chain.
