Today and any day, we know the importance of asking someone if they're OK. But do we really know where to go when the answer is NO? Follow these simple steps and remember to L E A D by example, when supporting someone who tells you they are not OK: L-ISTEN 👂 Do - listen intently to what they're saying Don't - interrupt or rush them. E-NCOURAGE 🆗 Do - encourage them to see it will be okay. Reassure that help can be found Don't - seem judgemental, panicked or negative in your response. A-CTION ✅ Do - take action Don't - Try not to try to solve their problem/s. You aren't expected to have all the answers. Ensure they are connected with a mental health resource (visit our website via the link in bio for a range of mental health support services - https://loom.ly/7pxE8dg) D-EBRIEF ↩️ Do - remember to follow up and debrief, check in and see how they're doing. Plus, seek help for yourself during this process. Supporting someone through a mental health challenge and/or suicidal thoughts can take a toll on the support person. Don't - do nothing. Please L E A D your friend to safety, it could help save their life 🤍 #RUOKDAY #RUOKANYDAY Lifeline 13 11 14

Electronic Security Industry leader driven by the passion of helping to make sure that bad things don't happen to good people.
I find that this time of year, around holidays and during people's reflections on the year, mental health discussions are incredibly important. Talking about mental health, whether you are the person needing help or the one offering help, is extremely necessary. I have a friend who I know needed help and at first he was resistant. I remained supportive and pleasantly persistent. I kept talking to him and reminding him that he is worth it and that his problems can be overcome with the right help and support. He finally accepted the help and is doing much better now 36 days later. Sometimes people want help but don't know that it is ok to ask for it and don't know that it is ok to accept it. Remember, asking for help is a strength and not a weakness. Please check out these 2 articles which give some really good tips and ideas of how, when, where, etc to start these types of conversations. I hope they help you or someone that you care about. [Trigger Warning] May is mental health awareness month. Sharing my story is key to helping build awareness and letting people know they aren’t alone. Suicide, unfortunately, is close to me. Mental health issues run in my family, and due to childhood trauma, I am a survivor of some extreme life circumstances. What you don’t know about me is that I was adopted. The story of adoption is both beautiful and tragic. One which has shaped my kindness and generosity, and yet complete anxiety in social situations and relationships. It broadened my horizons and plagued me all at the same time. I’ve experienced some major highs and major lows in the last five years-- these last three months are no exception. I know what it's like to have everything in the world at my fingertips yet feel alone on the inside. But I’m fortunate to have great friends and family in my corner who are always around to take my calls, texts, or meet me where I’m at in life. No one should feel so alone as to look around and think there is no way out… I encourage you to pick up the phone this week. Call that person you know is struggling. Remind them you’re in their corner. 10 mins of your day can change someone’s life. It’s changed mine. I’m still creating content but I’m also creating change internally to get my sparkle back. I'm here if you need to talk. #mentalhealthawareness
