On this last day of Diabetes Awareness Month, I thought I would make you aware of what 30 days of diabetes looks like—the parts you can see, anyway. This is one month of insulin pump and cartridge changes—every three dahs—and one month of continuous glucose monitor site changes—one every 10 days (which is actually an improvement from the one every three days or every seven days, depending on which brand you used). This doesn’t include injections when the sites go bad (or for those who use insulin injections in place of the pump 4-8 times per day), the finger pokes, the fatigue that comes with thinking about it 25-8-367, the hypoglycemic or hyperglycemia event, urinating in a cup to check ketones if you don’t have a blood ketone meter, and a whole host of things in between. This is not to say it can’t be done, but whereas those without diabetes (who aren’t directly involved with someone with diabetes) don’t have to think about these things, this is nothing but awareness for myself and my fellow diabetes warriors—and these are just the parts you can see. As we close out the month of awareness, I hope you’ve learned some things about diabetes and those who brave it every day. I hope you’ll take time to acknowledge your favorite person with diabetes today, because while tomorrow is Friday for all of us, it’s another day of awareness for those of us with diabetes. #type1diabetes #diabetesawarenessmomth

On October 29, 2023, the Republic of Turkey celebrates its Centennial. Turkey is my ancestral homeland, and the country where I lived through my youth. My own lifetime has covered over half of that of the Turkish Republic. In reflection, I continue to be amazed by all that its founder, #mustafakemalataturk , was able to accomplish in his all too short lifetime. Ataturk’s own youth was consumed by never-ending warfare, the collapse of an empire, and World War I. Soon after, he organized a grassroots army out of the ashes of defeat and won back independence for his homeland. He could easily have declared himself Sultan at that point, but instead he declared a Republic. From then until the end of his life, he dedicated himself to building a nation out of nothing, with his unwavering goal being for Turkey to reach and surpass contemporary civilization. Whereas the country did not even have a sugar factory when the Republic was born, it would eventually be taking orders for airplanes. Ataturk transitioned seamlessly from military general to statesman, but as someone who lived through the horrors of war firsthand, he adopted “peace at home, peace in the world” as his motto for the new Republic. A man of extraordinary vision, he foresaw not only World War II but also the potential of domestic corruption in the service of foreign interests, and warned his beloved youth of the country about them. The fact that the Republic has survived (and has, so far, avoided further warfare) is testament to the power of the north star that he established. I thus find it all the more remarkable that he retained the humility to say, “if ever in the future my words are contradicted by science, choose science.” We are stunned at the moment by the explosion of hatred and violence in the world. We are surrounded by “leaders” who are inept, or choose to put personal benefit over that of their nations. Ignorance and evil go hand in hand. It is all the more important today, then, to remember what real leadership is like. May the Republic of Turkey never stray from the path of enlightenment blazed by its founder, and may his vision of “peace at home, peace in the world” be our legacy to our children. #29ekim #100yil
