As American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary, we are excited to launch our new program, “New Perspectives on Humboldt.” The speakers series will kick off with a program titled “Navigating between Science and Politics: Humboldt and Early Science Diplomacy”, led by renowned Humboldt expert Sandra Rebok. On October 22nd, we will explore the intersection of science and politics through the lens of German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), who understood that science could not thrive in isolation. To achieve real impact, Humboldt reached beyond the scholarly community and connected with politicians and diplomats. As Sandra Rebok will argue, Humboldt’s navigation of these worlds was not just a strategic move—it was essential for advancing both science and society. In a time when #ScienceDiplomacy is crucial for tackling global challenges, Rebok’s analysis invites us to reconsider how Humboldt’s legacy continues to inform contemporary debates. How do we balance scientific inquiry with political influence? How do we foster international and cross-disciplinary collaboration to benefit societies at large? This event is not only for seasoned Humboldt scholars, but anyone interested in the broader implications of science in shaping policy. From 8 to 10 January 2024, the Global Model European Union (#GLOBALMEU) conference was organised at the Brussels School of Governance as a collaboration between colleges and universities around the world. 🗣 The primary purpose of GLOBALMEU is to provide a framework for a simulation of a European Council meeting, to better educate students about the European Union while giving them an opportunity to interact between students coming from the US, and EU member and candidate states. We are excited to announce that on Monday 26 February 2024, Sarah Nelson (University of Leiden) will lead the sixth session of the Seminar Series on Modern North American History, organized in cooperation with the Sciences Po Center for History (CHSP) in Paris. In her lecture, Nelson will explore the complex history of "information freedom," its ties to imperial ambitions and anti-colonial struggles, and its impact on global governance and power dynamics. “Information freedom” is a powerful and tricky discourse in the 21st century. It often trades in the sense that information “wants to be free”: that the unrestrained flow of information across borders inherently facilitates freedom of speech, liberal marketplaces of goods and ideas, and democratic self-expression. But this idea has a long and fraught history. Since as early as the interwar period, campaigns for “information freedom” have been freighted with imperial ambition and anti-colonial protest, inspiring fierce debate between state actors, engineers, press professionals, and social scientists about what information freedom means and what kinds of international regulatory orders should be made in its name. This talk will trace this history as it unfolded as technologies evolved from the telegraph to the early internet—and as the world order simultaneously transformed from one of empires to one of nation states—showing how these contestations became referenda on the legacies of empire in international governance, the power of the United States abroad, and the possibilities for economic and cultural sovereignty amid decolonization.
