THE REALITIES OF RETROFIT Here at Nicoll Russell Studios Ltd we are increasingly using our thermal camera to learn more about the buildings we are working with, how they are constructed and also to identify construction issues on conservation and other projects. This photograph is part of a sequence that actually revealed that there was probably more insulation around the envelope than we had guessed, but that there were at times construction gaps and in this case notable areas where there was simply no insulation. This dormer window is therefore a priority area, but these photographs also underlined that certain issues (accessible construction gaps) could be readily rectified. Clearly this type of photography can assist us in being more informed when we analyse buildings but it also adds an extra level of insight and assurance when reviewing construction on site. I have found it an interesting tool whilst reviewing leaks etc and I will be interested to see how informative it will be in better identifying defects in historic buildings too. #retrofit #insulation #architect #survey #conservation #heritage #infraredphotography #buildingsurvey
