What does it mean to be an LGBTQ+ person working in healthcare today? With this year’s #LGBTHistoryMonth celebrating #underthescope - the contribution of LGBTQ+ people to medicine and healthcare - conversations keep pivoting to this fundamental question. Here’s some of my thoughts. https://lnkd.in/ekM4Mpuz

In our latest video with Liam Paschall, we dive into the profound impact of culturally competent care on the LGBTQ+ community. Finding healthcare providers who are knowledgeable and affirming of LGBTQ+ identities can often feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Patients routinely run into invasive questions and providers who lead with their own curiosity instead of centering the patient’s personal and clinical needs. In states with less inclusive attitudes and laws, such as Tennessee and Florida, the trans community often faces heightened hostility, making it even more challenging to access safe and affirming healthcare. Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ patients frequently find themselves in the position of educating their healthcare providers about their community, adding an unnecessary burden to an already stressful experience. This lack of culturally competent care can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and gender dysphoria. Negative experiences may even discourage transgender individuals from engaging with healthcare systems altogether, putting their overall well-being at risk. It's clear that change is needed. Training around LGBTQ+ healthcare must be integrated into medical school curricula. Thankfully, this is starting to happen more regularly. We also need to promote continuing education opportunities that allow providers to learn more about the community and how to create safe clinic spaces. The National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center from Fenway Health is one spot providers can access FREE CMEs and other learning opportunities centered around the community. Navigating the healthcare system can be a daunting task for LGBTQ+ individuals, with many struggling to find providers who are knowledgeable about the unique needs and experiences of the community. If providers are unable to list this expertise on their clinic’s website, they can join sites such as OutCare Health and the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory, a joint venture between the Tegan and Sara Foundation and GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ+ Equality. That way, patients can find providers who are affirming just by searching for them online. A key point of health equity is to push for change and for better understanding of marginalized communities. Hopefully, our conversation with Liam helps shed some light on the difficulties face by the LGBTQ+ population. #CulturallyCompetentCare #LGBTQHealthcare #InclusiveMedicine #HealthEquity #SocialSaturday Image description: At the top left is Devra, a white woman with shoulder-length dark hair, wearing a teal shirt and glasses. Ensuring all patients, including LGBTQ+ individuals, feel safe and welcomed during healthcare visits is paramount. Historically, LGBTQ+ individuals have faced unique healthcare barriers, often within a cis- and hetero-normative framework. This underscores the importance of clinicians creating inclusive clinical environments for the approximately 23.9 million LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. Here are four ways DPC clinicians can foster an LGBTQ+-friendly practice.

Another tremendous thank you to Elevate Advocacy for giving me the platform to share my thoughts and experiences on such an important topic. Navigating the healthcare system can feel daunting for LGBTQ+ folx, often like searching for a needle in a haystack. It's disheartening to hear stories of invasive questions and a lack of patient-centered care, especially in places where the trans community faces even greater hostility. I’ve had own share of these experiences. The added burden of having to educate healthcare providers is a stressor we can, and should, aim to eliminate. The path to change involves integrating LGBTQ+ healthcare training into medical curricula and promoting continuing education for providers. It's great to see resources like the National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center at Fenway Health Health offering free educational materials to help create safer and more affirming healthcare spaces. Platforms like the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Directory are making it easier for individuals to find knowledgeable and affirming providers, marking a step in the right direction towards health equity. Our discussion reiterated the crucial need for compassionate, equitable care, education, and understanding. Let's continue pushing for a world where every member of the LGBTQ+ community can access the care they need without fear or hesitation. Here's to creating a future where healthcare is inclusive, affirming, and accessible to all. #LGBTQHealth #InclusiveCare #HealthEquity

I help women's and LGBTQ+ health companies share their science in compassionate, approachable language.
Picture this: you’re chatting with your doctor during a routine appointment, and you mention your weekend plans with your partner. Suddenly, your doctor freezes. He tells you he can no longer proceed with the appointment because he isn’t comfortable touching you. Your provider rushes out of the room, leaving you sitting on the exam table, alone and confused. For the founder of this week’s ✨ One to Watch Wednesday ✨ #startup, this was a real-life experience. When Justin Ayars, JD came out to his dermatologist as gay, his physician balked and refused to touch him. In that moment, this provider stopped seeing Justin as a human being in need of care. Justin founded equalityMD so that other people don’t have to go through the same #medicaltrauma he—and countless other LGBTQ+ folks—experienced. The Problem: 😤 28% of LGBTQ+ Americans have reported that at least one #healthcareprovider they have seen was biased against them or stereotyped them (Rummler and Methani, 2022 — The 19th News). 👩🏻⚕️ 24% of LGBTQ+ people feel their providers blamed them for their health problems—versus 12% of non-LGBTQ+ who feel the same (Rummler and Methani, 2022 — The 19th News). 🙅🏽 35% of LGBTQ+ people and their partners feel that their providers are insensitive towards them because of their identities (Stein, et al., 2023). Queer folks deserve better. The Solution: 🏥 equalityMD is building a portfolio of #healthcareproviders with whom LGBTQ+ patients can feel safe and respected. They require all providers on their platform to complete specialized #culturalcompetency training on health issues key to the queer community. 🖥 Their platform leverages #telehealth to improve access to care in places that lack LGBTQ-informed providers. Providers can reach more patients, and patients can get the care they deserve. 💰 Their monthly membership is built to be financially accessible: it’s $79/mo, and it provides access to 12 primary care, 12 mental health, and 12 urgent care visits per year (plus access to 1000+ prescription meds). 📊 As they grow, equalityMD plans to build an AI-powered data analytics platform that will help drive their innovation—and society’s understanding of queer health concerns—forward. The equalityMD team has surveyed over 32,000 LBGTQ+ people nationwide and interviewed over 350 individuals in person. Through these discussions, they’ve gathered unique insights into the needs of LGBTQ+ patients, positioning the company as the go-to source for data on LGBTQ+ #healthcare. I look forward to a day when it’s inconceivable that a provider would refuse care to someone based on their #genderidentity or #sexualorientation. Until that day comes, I’m grateful that innovative companies like equalityMD are stepping in to fill the gaps. The total addressable market for LGBTQ+ healthcare is valued at over $200B, and Justin Ayars, JD and his team are early players in this growing market space. 👀 equalityMD is One to Watch! 👀

What is affirming care and why is it important? This article explores the experience of unfair treatment and discrimination against BIPOC and LGBTQ+ people when visiting healthcare providers. The authors found that in response to stigma and bias experienced in healthcare settings, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ people tend to fight, flee, excuse, and work around bias. They go on to say: “Long-term consequences reflect 6 ways they coped: Delaying or Avoiding Care, Changing Healthcare Providers, Self-prescribing, Covering Behaviors, Experiencing Health Complications, and Mistrusting Healthcare Institutions.” Thank you to the authors and the Journal of the AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) for this exploration. PHIMC partners with healthcare providers, coaching staff at all levels to become intentional about providing affirming care. As human beings, we don't recognize our biases right away, but we can learn. In healthcare, the pursuit of excellence is not limited to medical expertise alone. Compassion, empathy, and an understanding of the diverse lives and challenges of patients are equally essential components of providing quality care. In this regard, it’s crucial for healthcare professionals to recognise the importance of understanding the lives and challenges faced by LGBTQ individuals. Ignorance in this area can have a profound impact on mental health and access to healthcare, making education and awareness paramount. That’s where my LGBTQ+ Awareness for Healthcare Professionals training programme can help. https://lnkd.in/enQBuU9P

Let’s face it. Gender-affirming care IS #healthcare. When this type of basic healthcare is only available in certain states, backlogs happen, and people suffer. In the case of #transgender youth, moving to a less hostile state is not usually an option. How can we better support our transgender youth in the face of such obstacles? #lgbtq #genderaffirming #transrights #transyouth #equityineducation https://loom.ly/APpKGUs
