Thriving nonprofits are based on a passion to help others combined with an entrepreneurial spirit to make a difference in the world. Shoes That Fit” is a concrete response to the overwhelming problem of child poverty in the United States. We tackle one of the most visible signs of poverty in America by giving children in need new athletic shoes to attend school with dignity and joy, prepared to learn, play and thrive. Our mission is much larger than shoes—we remove a basic barrier to a child’s success and invest in their self-esteem, providing an often overlooked item that is intrinsically important to a child’s sense of self. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced the inaugural grantees of the ENOUGH Grant Program, a first-in-the-nation, state-wide, place-based initiative to end concentrated child poverty. The 27 grantee organizations, representing Maryland’s urban, rural, and suburban communities, will receive funding and technical assistance from the state to combat child poverty at the neighborhood level through cross-sector partnerships. Our William Julius Wilson Institute team, which played an instrumental role in the passage and implementation of the ENOUGH Act, spoke with Governor Moore and three of the grantees, Elev8 Baltimore, Latin American Youth Center, and San Mar Family and Community Services about the transformative impact the ENOUGH Grant Program will have on children and families, and its potential to serve as a national model. #PowerofPlace

"LIIF supports this historic investment to drive economic parity in San Francisco's once predominantly African American and Asian neighborhood. We applaud the impact of the resident-led Freedom West 2.0 revitalization plan, a mixed-income, mixed-use masterplan development countering the dire effects of displacement that started in the mid-1950s. LIIF provided the first $250,000 grant in support of the resident leaders and to catalyze other funders to participate. We are now providing a $1.25M predevelopment loan under favorable terms to support this unique joint venture among the resident owners and Black-led private development team. COLLABORATIVE PLANNING FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH At the Walker Area Community Foundation, we’re working toward a shared goal: a vibrant economy that supports growth, development, and a better quality of life for everyone. Here’s why this matters: -Walker County's median household income ($52,987) is below both state and national averages. -23% of our children—many under age 5—live in poverty. -41% of local nonprofit leaders identified career advancement and wage increases as key to creating a thriving community. Together, we can address these challenges by fostering partnerships, supporting economic growth initiatives, and creating opportunities that uplift everyone in Walker County.

Hear from my colleagues Kazmyn Ramos, M.A., Sofie Fashana, Josh Cogan, and Sarah Berger Gonzalez on what cash transfers are, how they work, their impact and how effective they are, and the tools and actions needed to expand and advance cash transfer programs on the local, state, and national levels. Learn what Congress and some states and communities are doing to make cash transfers a reality, challenges advocates face in this effort, and important considerations for young people when participating in cash transfer programs (including the tax consequences of cash transfers and impact on existing public benefits).
