The modern economic system is a market economy, which is a capitalist economy where people, not the government--NOT THE GOVERNMENT--own most businesses. Internships, when well executed can be tools that elevate your impact with respect to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This isn't just about paying your interns well, either. That's the bare minimum. Not everyone has access to a car to arrive on time or a budget for nice clothing to match the corporate aesthetic. However, one of the best ways to influence upward mobility is relationships. As interns - they have less to lose and more to gain by building relationships with each other and staying connected. In addition to making sure your program is less about cleaning out the file cabinets and more about building basic skills that make them viable for entry level roles... teach your interns how to network in a fashion that cultivates depth of relationship - not just quantities. I made that mistake as a rookie intern. By the 4th internship I realized collecting the name or business card of every lost soul I encountered in the elevator wasn't going to cut it.
