Busy weekend for Congress on the privacy and social media protections front. Legislators approved a Ukraine/Israel aid package that included the bill requiring #TikTok to divest or face banishment in the U.S., and reauthorized surveillance provisions of FISA Sec, 702 for an additional two years. Today, the FBI released their 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟑 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 to provide an overview of active shooter incidents to help law enforcement, other first responders, and the private sector to better understand the levels of threats associated with active shooter incidents. In 2023, The FBI has designated 48 shootings as active shooter incidents, which declined by 4% from 2022 to 2023. The FBI defines an active shooter as one or more individuals actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area. Of these incidents, 36.09% were linked to criminal activity, armed attacks, and general insecurity. This represents a decline from 42.87% reported in week 42.
