Sorry to have missed this but really enjoyed listening to the recording! Thanks for sharing. 'Power' should be such a helpful concept in school geography, giving students the sense of agency (and so hope), both in understanding who the gatekeepers and influencer of change are but also in challenging and resisting current power structures and hegemonies and move away from the sense of inevitability about the world that we often see in A level responses. It was so useful to be reminded that we had 'power' specifically as a concept in our 2008/09 Edexcel AS/A2 specifications in the 'Going Global' and 'Superpower Geographies' units but not sure how well understood or embedded they were at that time. As Daryl says I think discussions of power would be particularly well suited to understanding and diversifying the local scale Dynamic Places topics of the current A level spec as well as more explicitly (as least as far as ALCAB influenced DfE Subject content) in Global Systems and Geopolitics topics. We encourage teachers to focus our 'Players' synoptic theme in current A level on 'Power' in relation to influence (linked to the specialist DfE/ALCAB concept of 'inequality') and not just 'stakeholders'

This year at Oak National Academy, we’ve been releasing a brand new curriculum for primary geography with our expert partners the Geographical Association. With the curriculum nearly fully resourced, let’s explore a resource I’m REALLY proud of…🥁 📌North and South America: how diverse are their places and landscapes? This regional study of North and South America has been carefully crafted by primary teachers for primary teachers. Here are four reasons why I think they’re unmissable: - They carefully use a range of maps, aerial photography and images to develop pupils’ knowledge of the different countries and bring to life the diverse physical and human landscapes found across the continents. - Broader geographical knowledge of tricky concepts, like lines of latitude and longitude, are carefully integrated into the unit. - Complex geographical techniques like climate graphs are carefully modelled so that pupils are building key skills of geographical investigation throughout the unit. - They’re absolutely free and align with the focus on North and South America in the KS2 National Curriculum! “Why are insects so important to earth’s ecosystems?” is the essential curricular question in our new program at the American Museum of Natural History, Beyond Elementary Explorations in Science (BEES). BEES educators Margaret Hoffman and Jacob Sienko, co-teaching with the teachers from the visiting classes, first introduce students to what #insects are and to what #ecosystems are. Then they help students understand how insects interact with other species; and what roles insects play in ecosystems. Finally, the educators focus on insects’ deep importance to ecosystems. One very important way we are trying to understand what students learned during this week-long experience is to look at their work; specifically at the kinds of #models they created in the program. Here is an example of a model of an ecosystem developed by a student on Day 1 and again on Day 5. ‘We aim to ensure that all young people, regardless of their background, have access to high-quality geography resources’.’ In 2024, the GA and Oak National Academy proudly launched a free, fully resourced, and adaptable primary geography curriculum with over 230 lessons to spark pupils' curiosity about the world. Building on this success, we're thrilled to announce the development of a comprehensive KS3 and KS4 geography curriculum, set to be released in 2025, to further deepen pupils' geographical knowledge and skills. By drawing students and staff from across Dublin, the country and the world, Dublin City University contributes to the fabric of the city. Another way the university affects the city is through research. Projects from across DCU are tracking the city’s past and present, and scanning the horizon to plot its potential future. For instance, Dublin’s city centre is layered in history. The period following the Irish Civil War is now just over a hundred years ago, and a paper by Dr Daithí Ó Corráin (School of History and Geography) and Dr Joe Rodgers charts the restoration of O’Connell Street following intense combat in the area. https://lnkd.in/egyrH6st
