🌿🏙️Rethinking urban spaces: the rise of active transportation🚲 The shift toward active transportation is reshaping urban landscapes worldwide, and street parking plays a pivotal role in this transformation. As cities face mounting challenges like congestion and air pollution, prioritizing active transportation infrastructure becomes essential for creating healthier and more livable communities. 🌱 “To facilitate the growth of this clean and green transportation machine, one of the most significant trends in recent years has been removing street parking spaces for cars to create more space for bicycles (and pedestrians). Says Ron Johnson. By repurposing street parking spaces for bikes lanes, wider sidewalks, and pedestrian-friendly zones, cities can: ✅Promote physical activity ✅Reduce carbon emissions ✅Enhance overall quality of life From Paris to Barcelona, European cities are setting a powerful example of how investing in active transportation infrastructure can yield significant benefits for public health, the environment, and urban mobility.🎉🌿 Read more: https://lnkd.in/ekAcMtkx #bikeshare #bikesharing #micromobility

🚴♂️ **The Intersection of Urban Bike Storage and Local Business: A Need for Balance** 🚗 As we navigate the evolving landscape of urban mobility, a recent news article brings to light a crucial debate: the conflict between the increasing demand for bicycle storage and the operational needs of local businesses. The owner of AB Autos has threatened legal action over plans to build bicycle storage facilities outside new flats, asserting that they would disrupt access to his showroom and negatively impact his business. This controversy underscores several critical issues relevant to the bike industry: 1. **Urban Planning and Mobility:** As cities aim to become more bike-friendly, it is essential that urban planners consider the needs of all stakeholders. Effective design solutions that harmonize bike storage with local business operations can foster a more inclusive urban environment. 2. **Pedestrian Safety and Accessibility:** Proper placement of bike storage is vital to ensure it does not obstruct pedestrian pathways or business entrances. Prioritizing pedestrian safety and accessibility can prevent potential conflicts and ensure a cohesive community. 3. **Industry Advocacy:** This situation highlights the need for the bike industry to advocate for policies that support both sustainable transportation and the vitality of local businesses. Collaborative efforts with city planners and business owners can lead to strategies that benefit all parties involved. 4. **Innovative Solutions:** There is an opportunity for innovation here. Companies in the bike industry can explore creative storage solutions that minimize space usage and disruption while promoting bike usage. For our industry, it’s imperative to closely monitor such disputes and advocate for balanced solutions. By supporting infrastructure that promotes cycling while considering the needs of local businesses, we can drive forward a more sustainable and cohesive urban future. 📢 **Industry Colleagues: How do you think we can better integrate bike infrastructure without compromising local businesses? "Revolutionizing Commute: Mimico GO's Transformation Unveils a New Era of Transit-Living!" Metrolinx is actively enhancing its infrastructure to better serve the bicycling community, ensuring that stations like Mimico GO are transformed into modern, integrated transit hubs. This includes significant improvements such as new station access points, fully accessible buildings, and notably, dedicated bicycle storage spaces. These upgrades are part of a broader initiative to integrate transit solutions with community development, aiming to support the growing ridership and the needs of the surrounding areas. The partnership with Vandyk Properties is a pivotal move towards creating transit-oriented communities (TOCs) that are designed to be vibrant and complete, with easy access to transit stations. This not only supports the goal of increasing transit ridership but also emphasizes the importance of sustainable living and commuting options. The revamp of such stations, including Mimico GO, is expected to provide more opportunities for residents to live and work near transit facilities, benefiting from all-day two-way services and contributing to the reduction of traffic congestion. While the information available does not specify Zippy Bike's involvement with Metrolinx directly, the emphasis on improved bicycle infrastructure and the creation of transit-oriented communities suggests a conducive environment for bike-sharing services and other cycling-related initiatives to thrive. By enhancing access and storage for bicycles at key transit nodes, Metrolinx is indirectly fostering a more bike-friendly ecosystem that companies like Zippy Bike could complement and enhance, further extending the reach and convenience of public transit in combination with cycling. For more detailed information on the developments at Mimico GO Station and the potential impact on the biking community, you can refer to the full articles on Progressive Railroading and Mass Transit websites. #MimicoGOTransformation #MetrolinxRevolution #ZippyBikePartnership #SustainableCommute #TransitOrientedLiving #GoGreenWithGO #BikeAndRide #UrbanMobilityUnleashed #EcoFriendlyTransit #FutureOfTravel #CycleYourCity #ZippyBikeLife #CommunityOnTheMove #RideWithZippy #GOingPlaces

Steering with (bike) parking Many cities in the world are currently striving to increase the percentage of people commuting (or simply moving) by bike. For that reason, bike lanes have been progressively appearing, sometimes in very reasonable places, other times in more questionable parts. Sometimes with a safe and effective design, others creating more difficulties than solving them. This has been a heated topic of discussions not only among urban planners and city design professionals but also present in family gatherings, over beer with friends or when lunching with colleagues. However, far less attention has been given to the parking space. This is interesting, particularly considering that reducing free parking in city centers has proven to be a quite effective measure to also reduce circulation by car. It would be logic that the reverse works with bikes. In many cities in the world, outside of the Netherlands, of course, owning a bike means having to carry it upstairs, sometimes three floors or more and store it in a balcony to avoid having it stolen at night (or even during the day). It is clear that we need more secure bike parking spaces in the ground floors of our buildings. Cool, need identified. We can do that with new developments but how do we deal with existing constructions? Isn't it already challenging to handle accessibility measures, recycling spaces and fitting new elevators in already crowded ground-floors? If we fill those with all these other uses, are we killing the commercial areas and, with that, vibrant street life? In Lausanne, they have found an interesting solution to this issue. The installation of protected personal bike parkings in the street parking spaces originally dedicated to cars. It can be rented for a certain time and it protects the bike from the weather and the people (although I feel this is probably less important in Switzerland than in other places). So, what do you think? Stupid idea or a desirable future? Please, give me your take! #mobility #urbanplanning #bikes #urbandesign #publicspace https://lnkd.in/dkrhggmg
