Despite primary education being free and compulsory, a staggering number of Nigerian children are not in school. Only 61% of children aged 6-11 attend regularly, and just 35.6% of preschool-aged children receive early childhood education. This highlights the need to address various challenges, including limited resources, shortage of teachers and cultural barriers. #youthpartyng #education #nigeria #outoftoschool

📚 In our Phuhlisa! Learner Engagement Programme, our social workers collaborate closely with school-based support teams to identify at-risk students early. By offering life skills sessions, counselling, and psychosocial support, we help prevent learners from dropping out. Research from UNICEF shows that early warning systems that track indicators such as attendance, academic performance, and emotional well-being are critical for early intervention. This approach allows schools and support programmes like ours to provide targeted assistance before students become disengaged, ensuring they stay on track. 📰 "Early warning systems use indicators such as absenteeism, low academic performance, and social or emotional issues to identify students at risk of dropping out." 🔗 Full Link: https://lnkd.in/emfZ-NB #StayInSchool #DropoutPrevention

Earlier this week, I watched a video that broke my heart. Daniela, a young girl diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that affects movement and posture, is seen struggling to type on a laptop during her final high school exams. Despite her perseverance and the school’s efforts to accommodate her needs, the challenges she faces are immense. Her laptop even shut down mid-exam, forcing her to start over, and she finished late into the evening, as her father mentioned in the longer version of this video. As someone who has lived with an invisible disability myself, I know all too well what it means to face barriers in accessing knowledge. Especially as a girl from Northern Ghana, who grew up in Kasoa, education should never be a burden, yet too many of us have to fight twice as hard to access it. As an educator, my guiding principles are “inclusivity” and “equity”. Every child, regardless of ability, deserves a learning environment that supports their unique needs and helps them thrive. Today, more than ever, I’m using my voice to advocate for better support systems in education, not just for Daniela, but for every child who is left behind. Let’s create schools that cater to ALL students. It’s time we rethink how we assess abilities and give everyone a fair chance. "For young people across Africa, education must be more than just textbooks and exams.” To my network: Let’s come together to support inclusive education. Let’s raise awareness and push for change because every child deserves an opportunity to succeed. Transportation 🚃: A Major Barrier To Inclusive Education 🚨 One of the major barriers impeding marginalized children from accessing inclusive and quality education is Transportation. . ⭐Children living in rural communities sometimes have to trek due to the far distance between their home and school. This alone can cause inconsistency and fatigue, especially when means of transportation cannot be afforded. ⭐ I have heard a story of the former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who had to trek barefooted to school while growing up in His rural community. His tenacity is inspiring. See how Education is important? 💫 I think of children with disabilities who are immobile, children whose challenges prevent them from walking a considerable distance, children with disability whose parents do not have the financial capacity to pay for transportation or support services How then can they access quality and equitable education with such a barrier? Invariably, the average African child with a disability from a poor home can be deprived of inclusive and quality education due to lack of transportation. 🚨 It is important to note that in making policies and its implemention, the marginalized needs should be prioritized. When government and other leaders make efforts to combat prejudice towards CwD from the national level, it becomes easier to combat challenges faced at the local level. Also, more learning facilities can be built in close proximity to rural areas, support services can be used to assist the children and free transportation can also be made available for the children. #inclusiveeducation #globaldevelopment #equitableeducation

In the heart of Central America, the Protective Learning and Nurturing Environments for Girls Education (PLANE) project is making a significant impact on education. From 2019 to 2023, the UNICEF and Canada initiative supported national education systems in #ElSalvador, #Guatemala and #Honduras. The project aimed to address the individual barriers faced by girls, in addition to ensuring young and adolescent girls who are out of school, at risk of dropping out, internally displaced or returned migrants have access to education opportunities. By the end of 2023 in Honduras, the project had established 117 safe learning spaces and a tutorial learning system, providing around 82,000 adolescents with access to flexible education delivery with blended and distance learning methods. These students also received psychosocial and psycho-educational support, life and job placement skills, as well as vocational training and technical skills tailored to labour market needs. Additionally, more than 8,400 teachers and facilitators were trained in psycho-emotional care and mental health to improve the well-being of children and adolescents in formal and non-formal education. Through the PLANE project, education transformed lives and became a source of resilience for vulnerable children and adolescents, especially girls, ensuring that every child had an opportunity to learn and grow, even in the most challenging circumstances. 📸 © UNICEF/UNI484327/Flores #EducationForAll | #GlobalEducation | #GenderEquality | #InternationalEducation | #InternationalDevelopment | #BackToSchool

Every child deserves access to equitable and quality education. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, many children have never attended school or have had to drop out due to various reasons. Our programmes focus on equitable participation and outcomes for girls and boys most affected by inequality and discrimination. We have supported 160 Accelerated Learning Centres since 2019 for girls and boys in Pakistan, ensuring they receive the education they deserve. Upon their graduation, they can either be mainstreamed to government schools or receive further vocational education to be financially sustainable, so as to break the cycle of child forced marriage. As International Literacy Day approaches, we envision a world where more children have access to equitable and quality education services. On this day and every day, Save the Children celebrates the importance of literacy for children. Support us, so together we can end the illiteracy crisis and help children like Fiza learn and follow their dreams! #SaveTheChildrenHK #Learning #Education #InternationalLiteracyDay #QualityEducation #EndIlliteracy #SupportChildren #Pakistan #SDG

As we lay the foundation for Roots of Excellence Pan African Learning Center, I've been deeply engaged in exploring African-centered educational research. This work has highlighted profound wisdom embedded in our cultural practices, particularly in a study of parenting within the Agĩkũyũ community of Kenya. The research by Wachege and Rũgendo examines how parenting environments have evolved, transitioning from strong communal support to more individualized approaches. A few key insights: Communal Parenting: Traditionally, the Agĩkũyũ relied on extended family and community involvement to raise children. This approach fostered a sense of belonging and shared responsibility, instilling moral values and social cohesion. Cultural Rites: Initiation rites played a crucial role in teaching youth about responsibility and community values. Unfortunately, these practices have diminished, leading to a loss of collective identity among younger generations. Home Environment: A nurturing home environment, with active involvement from both parents, is essential for children's development. The absence of one parent can negatively impact a child's confidence and sense of security. Need for Adaptation: As societal dynamics change, there is a need to adapt parenting strategies that embrace communal involvement and intergenerational learning. Engaging extended family members can enrich children's experiences and reinforce shared values. Holistic Development: By fostering strong community ties and emphasizing cultural heritage, we can nurture well-rounded individuals who are both culturally grounded and globally competent. This research provides valuable insights for shaping our approach at Roots of Excellence. I look forward to continuing this journey and sharing more insights as we continue to build our vibrant learning community!
