Stella Young was a fearless Australian disability rights activist and comedian known for her sharp wit and candid humor in challenging societal perceptions of disability. She passed away in 2014, but through her advocacy work and viral TED Talk, she left a lasting global impact on promoting inclusivity and equality for people with disabilities.
In 2012, she coined the term #InspirationPorn to describe the portrayal of persons with disabilities as inspirational solely - or in part - on the basis of their disability.

Today marks the start of Disability Pride Month... if you're following me you probably already know about it, but for the majority of people and businesses, this is an awareness month few know about.
It may be confusing for some, coming off the back of Pride in June, hearing 'Disability Pride' and thinking that this month is also connected to LGBTQ Pride (in fact, one notable memory is a head of diversity for a fairly large company saying 'that's too confusing, you should change that.')
Though disability is absolutely an intersectional identity, this month of July is about finding pride in the identity of being disabled.
An uncomfortable, revolutionary idea.
Being disabled AND proud can be an exhausting, wild journey when:
The world needs convincing of our value.
People are still uncomfortable even saying the word disabled
Disability is seen as ‘separate’ or ‘other’ when in reality, it’s a part of life.
I hope this message reaches people who may or may not have heard of Disability Pride Month but don’t know much about its history or significance.

This month is a great time to learn and educate yourself as much as possible, and most importantly, listen to disabled people and their experiences, and amplify their voices, as we are so often left out of the conversation, overlooked and ignored.
We need change; we need attitudes and beliefs around disability to change, equal opportunities, support, understanding and consistent action.
Don’t underestimate the power of an individual who gains the knowledge and awareness they can then share with the right people.
