As Black women, we have experienced the trauma of our intellect, leadership, and person being constantly challenged and erased. Let's call it what it is: Misogynoir. For Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing the successes and achievements of BARDA employees. Meet Rosemary Hill, Associate Director, Business Operations, Division of Contract Management and Acquisitions. One of Rosemary’s greatest career achievements to date is being consistently sought out to provide mentorship. “Having something worthwhile to say that has encouraged, motivated, and inspired others continues to be an honor.” Rosemary’s advice to young women who are just starting their professional careers is: “No matter if you are starting your academic or professional career the key to finding YOU, loving YOU and growing YOU is BALANCE. First Gens Rise Up 👐 From immigrants to migrants to everyone in-between, could not be more proud to be in this "nomadic" community I call home. Speaking from experience, sense of identity, purpose and even just Career is often a struggle when you are first generation. Pressure is put on you by yourself but also your family. There are times that you feel as if you need to excel because of what sacrifices your family made for you to have opportunity for education, career ect. No one talks about the guilt that comes with being first generation or a immigrant, only the "benifits" you magically have / do not really have. One thing we all have is Resilience. Programs like TRIO exist for a reason and they are beyond essential. Luther College had an amazing program led by Chivonne Blankenship Marlow & Gwen. Passionate people inspire those who need it most. 💡A reason I work for the government and continue to do so is to inspire others but also provide representation where it has not been before. Create and enable systems, policies and programs that are equitable, inclusive and equal. This starts with education. Education is the foundation that often lays your future as an adult. 🌟 What an inspiring story from U.S. Department of State ! Government is an awesome career and often hard to explain especially when you are first generation. Still to this day, my family has no idea what my job entails, but hey they could not be more proud! The federal government is an amazing opportunity for those seeking public service and lifelong careers. However, life itself is not for sissies, as every age has its trials. Young people face difficult decisions about education, career, family, emotions, hormones, and identity issues. As we age, we struggle with raising our children, gaining financial security, and retirement. As we age, we face the loss of loved ones to death. The secret to successful living is not finding an easy, carefree existence, but being "up to" the trials that life brings. Breaking down from overwork is not about overworking, but from "under being." Most people are not given too much to cope with, but sometimes feel like their inner resources are too low to handle it. To navigate smoothly through life, one needs good values, a positive support system, a strong purpose, an optimistic spirit, respect for others and oneself.

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell a group of 20 year old students? I posed this question to a Forum group of C-level executives in their 50s. Here is what they said, -Learning is not over. It’s just beginning -Find your passion -Don’t listen to the naysayer -Decisions you are about to make they are not as critical as you think -Be flexible and be prepared to pivot -Find your calling as early as you can in your career -Invest in yourself. Put yourself first. -You can do anything -Don’t lose connection with yourself -Nothing is pre-destined -Be engaged in your country What else?

Young talent will improve the quality of life for all.
