The MCASF Safety Committee, dedicated to enhancing worker safety, has been instrumental in fostering a culture where safety is ingrained in daily operations, moving beyond mere compliance. Today, the committee takes a significant stride by advocating for 360-degree head protection in the event of falls, introducing climbing helmets for elevated work, or any conditions where falls are likely. Why is the MCASF Safety Committee advocating for transitioning from traditional hard hats to climbing helmets? The work of our trade creates significant exposure for traumatic brain injuries and head trauma associated with falls – even falls from a short distance. Unlike hard hats, climbing helmets equipped with chin straps ensure head protection and, most importantly, remain intact during a fall. Offering protection from the front, back, sides, and top, climbing helmets surpass the limited coverage provided by traditional hard hats. During last week’s MCASF Membership Meeting, presenter George Stallings provided an informative talk on the evolution of hard hats, noting that traditional hard hat technology has changed minimally since hard hats were first introduced over 100 years ago. George went on to provide several demonstrations of how safety helmets offers far-superior head protection. August and September has seen Safety Champion Software cross the pacific to attend both the National Safety Council and American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Expositions. My learnings…from 350+ conversations: ✅ Functionality. Safety Champion’s module stack doesn’t just match, we exceed the “functionality” expectations from the conversations we had. ✅ Price. We’re shaking things up. It was our observation that local solutions are priced insanely high, resulting in a barrier to entry; especially at the small and medium end of town. In line with our mission, we’ve removing this objection. ✅ Survival. Once the accent puzzle was solved, the conversation often took a surprising turn to “Australian ‘things’ that kill you”. Spiders, snakes, drop bears. You’d be forgiven for expecting us to turn up in khaki next conference season! To all who stopped to speak with Dan, Ryan and I, + those that welcomed us into their network with open arms - thank you. …now the work beings.
