The youngest employees in the workforce aren’t so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed these days, according to new data. Employee engagement among #GenZ and younger #millennial workers (who were born after 1989) has declined the most compared to all other age groups since the onset of the pandemic. For every actively disengaged employee in that age group, there is only one engaged one, Gallup’s most recent survey on employee engagement found. Since 2020, engagement rates overall dropped from 40% to 35% for Gen Z and younger millennials. In this piece by Hailey Mensik, we speak to Kelsey Bishop, and Jim Harter.

Younger generations show ‘dramatic decline’ in engagement, Gallup says. Talent experts have been urging employers to shift their thinking on engagement since it began declining a few years ago. The percentage of engaged older millennials fell from 39% to 32%, while younger millennials and Gen Z fell from 40% to 35% and Generation X fell from 35% to 31%. Employee engagement among young and middle-age workers is dropping fast with many actively looking for new work or watching for openings. With worker shortages continuing, that should have employers concerned even if they hold the leverage in the current environment. The reason: it's personal. For employers, do you think your workers feel cared for? That single question is at the heart of whether your employees stick around. And while employee satisfaction has been waning for years, the problems are nothing new. So why can't we seem to fix anything? For employees, you've been down this path many times, and what you want hasn't changed much. While various factors contribute to employee satisfaction, the most crucial aspect is feeling valued. This encompasses feeling cared about by colleagues and managers, having opportunities to learn and grow professionally, connecting with the organization's mission, receiving regular feedback, and having their ideas heard. By prioritizing these elements, employers can cultivate a work environment that fosters employee satisfaction and reduces turnover. A big part of the problem has to do with control and trust. Return-to-office mandates and increasing layoffs targeting remote workers have certainly shown who's in the control while at the same time, undermining any remaining trust. The us vs them mentality is back in force through tactics such as employee surveillance and pushback against work-life balance. Having said all that, we've always had the solutions to boosting employee engagement. While clear vision, defined job roles, and occasional in-person mentorship remain pillars of a productive and engaged workplace, a new cornerstone is emerging, especially for younger generations: flexibility. Offering flexible work schedules and locations empowers employees and eliminates the resentment that can arise from rigid, inflexible structures.
