A candidate recently joined our client remotely. By week 2 they wanted to quit. The interviews all went well and the candidate couldn’t wait to get started. But then there was trouble. The person who interviewed the candidate was on holiday when they joined. This resulted in: • No official team welcome or introduction. • No formal Slack Invite. • No talk of training • Late laptop and tech arrival They felt left out in the first week and started thinking about leaving. We told the client right away. They saw the problem and acted quickly. By identifying the problem early, we managed to turn things around. TLDR for those onboarding: 1) Assign mentors or buddies Pair new hires with experienced team members. No reliance on 1 person. 2) Personalised Onboarding Tailor onboarding plans to individual needs. 3) Utilise technology Use tools like Loom and interactive learning for efficient onboarding. 4) Regular check-ins: Schedule feedback sessions to provide support and make necessary adjustments. One thing I've learned from speaking with clients over the years: no two businesses look for the same thing when hiring. It’s a wild mix! But here's my philosophy when bringing someone into our business: ✅ Hungry (for success, not just the office snacks) ✅ Goes the extra mile (like... marathon-level extra 🏃♂️) ✅ A Good Egg (someone you’d trust to babysit your plants 🪴) ✅ Super resilient (can weather storms without crumbling like a pink wafer in hot tea 🍪) It’s not just about qualifications on paper – it’s about having that spark, that drive, and that ability to bounce back from setbacks.
