I just watched the body cam footage of Sonya Massey being shot. It is shocking, and that's not even the right word. I’m so tired of all of this senseless killing.
I’ve been watching daily atrocities in Gaza, and this feels like more of the same. This woman was shot in the face. She wasn’t worthy of life, and a police officer used his position of power to act with impunity.
He shot her in the face.
The face.
The officer could have stepped back if he was worried about hot water. He could have used his taser, and he chose to use a gun. Because he could. Because he was in a position of power.
He did not have his body cam on. And he stopped any administration of aid.
What entitlement.
What an unnecessary loss.
What a shame.
All paid for by our tax dollars. After all, this is our system. Doing to black and brown bodies, and anyone who challenges it, what it’s meant to do.
I have lost all faith in justice, even with indisputable evidence of wrong-doing. Thank goodness for video, or there would be no hope of justice.
But I don’t want justice. I want Sonya Massey to be here. I want all of the Gazans who have been murdered, maimed, injured, separated from their families, displaced from their homes… I want them to be able to live with dignity, have their health and homes and family members back. I want there to be no occupation, I want there to be no apartheid, and no hostages.
In her moment of vulnerability, she called on her faith for strength. Sonya Massey said,
“I rebuke you in the name of Jesus”.
It is an expression many Christians use in resisting Satan, demons, evil. It hurts to think that the powers that be have even twisted the legacy of Jesus to subjugate folks.
God, forgive us for all of our shortcomings and all of the evil we continue to allow. Until we can actually identify the root cause of a problem, or even that we have a problem, we have no hope of fixing it. Until we can collectively acknowledge our history, how systems of power work, how racism hurts us all, how we got here… we will continue to be losers.
Maybe when #blacklivesmatter we can start to talk about #humanrights.
إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioun.
Surely we belong to Allah and to Allah shall we return
Rest in Power Sonya Massey.
I will remember you, just like I remember all of the other losses I have witnessed in Gaza. I’m glad to at least know your name.
