This was the first day at nursery for my youngest, going back quite a few years!! What struggles are you facing or did you face when it came to securing and funding nursery places for your little ones? There are currently around 13 million working parents with dependent children, out of a total workforce of 32 million. Roughly 400,000 people want to work but can’t because of childcare responsibilities.  ❌What a loss of skills and talent. 👨👩👧👦 Factors such as flexibility, autonomy, equal parental leave make a huge difference. BUT affordable childcare is also essential. Issues with the Free Childcare System for Working Parents! The current system is far too rigid and appears to penalise parents based on arbitrary cut-off dates rather than supporting them in their return to work. In my view, this system needs urgent reform to reflect the realities of modern working life. Funding should be made available to parents from the month they return to work, not delayed until the next calendar term. At present, the only way to avoid being out of pocket is to start work in January, April, or September – a restriction that is not practical or fair for working families. Are you ready for this mindblowing idea from Sweden? Not content with ALREADY having the best childcare system in the world, the Swedes have kicked it up another notch. They've invented 'grandparental leave'. This means grandparents can have rights to request time off work to look after a baby (if they're still working), and can access parental leave funding to do so. Just to remind you, Swedish parents get a whopping 480 days of parental leave per child. As of this month, parents can transfer up to 90 days of this to grandparents. Let's hope Swedish childcare policy can be as successfully exported as IKEA. It's taking a while though - I'm still hoping for proper shared parental leave in the UK.... which the Swedes introduced FIFTY YEARS AGO. 👩👧 The Importance of Childcare for Women Entrepreneurs 👩👧 I want to share a story about a dear friend of mine who is currently facing a challenge that many parents, especially women entrepreneurs, encounter. My friend, a brilliant speaker, is set to present at Inventures, coming from out of town with her child in tow. However, she has been unsure where to find the childcare she needs while she is on stage. This uncertainty adds stress to an already busy schedule and highlights a crucial issue. Fortunately, I recently met a lovely human Lulu Mashonganyika the founder of LiiT Care Connect Inc. who provides childcare support and matches parents with care providers. This experience makes me reflect on how essential accessible childcare is for parents and women entrepreneurs. Without such support, it is incredibly difficult for them to fully engage in their professional responsibilities and contribute their best to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. While childcare may not always be a standard consideration at events, it’s an area that deserves more attention. As we strive to build inclusive and supportive environments for entrepreneurs, we must prioritize making childcare accessible. This ensures that parents can be fully present in their roles without compromising their family responsibilities. Let's work together to create solutions that allow all entrepreneurs to thrive, knowing their family needs are met. We need to find ways to support parents, particularly women, so they can continue to innovate and lead without having to choose between their careers and their families. And fathers. Childcare is expensive, if it exists at all. A job with any flexibility is hard. And even when men ask for time for their families, they’re questioned about it. ‘ Because we want men to be the breadwinners and women to be the homemakers. Not to mention, working a paying job and then coming home for a 2nd shift of managing the house and taking care of kids is exhausting. It’s taking a toll on women’s mental and physical health.
