Support the intern... Never mind the big names with big offices (and maybe some big egos :), it is time to support the intern... as this could be mutually beneficial. When you put yourself and your work into the world you never know who is watching (this has surprised me countless times over the last 25 years)... I fully believe in treating everyone well on the way 'up' - I mean, really, whether you are going up or down or side to side, it is really important. The intern may be the person who is gathering the selections and if you are clear, concise, ready etc you could make the intern look excellent when they deliver those choices. Awesome session on Skills Based Hiring and Inclusive Hiring with SIM Seattle Chapter and Year Up last night in Fremont at FREMONT MISCHIEF INC with John Nelson Matt Rossmeissl Saben Emmons and Mj Jensen. Key Takeaways from the Panel: 1) Mentorship, mentorship, mentorship: Keola Ohumukini said it best in that the opportunity to be a mentor is a true privilege and mentoring others (especially those who have less advantage) is important for all of us. 2) Generational Change: The power of Year Up really rests with giving students a unique opportunity to experience tech or a more professional career versus retail or other hourly jobs that are accessible without a college degree. When a Year Up student is able to earn that higher income, higher skill job/career with benefits, we are changing the arc of their career and life and likely their parents and their children as well. Investing in and volunteering with Year Up is a tremendous opportunity. 3) Hands-on Education in IT: Both Mj Jensen & Saben Emmons said that they would have loved a program like Year Up to help break into the tech industry. Much of tech is learned on the job with the right attitude and life skills. Both MJ and Saben have built very successful careers with Expedia Group, Amazon, Bezos Academy and City of Kirkland without a college degree. 4) Get more than you give: Inevitably, Year Up interns are able to push the hiring organizations forward through exposure to diversity of thought, youth, and challenging the status quo. Your supervisor assigned a group project to you and another summer intern. It's understood that only one of you will be hired back after graduation. You tried to engage the other intern for the project but he said he has too much on his plate. You worked all weekend figuring out how the project should be done. On Monday, the other intern came and said, "So where are we at for the project? Brief me about our progress, would you?". Being a team player, you gave him the every output of your hard work before you realized, "Is he going to take the credit of the work?". Working with a competing intern is tough. He could stab your back at worst or be your biggest ally and friend at best. As I wrap up my internship at Trilegal, here are a few things that helped me make the most out of it. ◾ Knowing your team well: Take an active interest in knowing each member of my team. Don't just approach them for tasks. Ask them about their experience and specific questions about their research approach. Each team member has valuable insights about the work and culture. That helps you understand the environment and prepare yourself to better assess tasks and deal with whatever comes to you. ◾ Take feedback: Take every chance to interact with your mentor/team member, where you can speak up about your opinion/perspective. Before submitting a research note, Could you share how you approached the task and your findings? This will allow them to understand your work methodology, and they will help you refine your thought process with their feedback/suggestions ◾ Ask for help: If you hit a wall while doing a task, Don't hesitate to ask your mentor/team members for clarification. Whenever you get a research proposition, ask as many questions as possible to narrow down your research's bounds. While researching, we primarily look into grey areas where we might need help finding clear answers. That's why you should always share your findings, even when you feel they are remotely related to get feedback that will further help you refine your research.

"But you're just an intern!" Heard that before? I started out as an intern, navigating the same doubts, questions, and occasional underestimation that most interns face. But here’s the thing—I didn’t stay “just an intern” for long. In 4 months, I went from intern to Head of Admin. How? By mastering the art of influence without authority. Here’s the playbook I used: 1/ Be the go-to problem solver. The more involved you are, the more indispensable you become. 2/ Build relationships across all levels. You never know who can vouch for you. 3/ Over-deliver consistently. If you do more than what they expect, you get more than you deserve. 4/ Share credit generously. Great projects are always done by great teams. 5/ Speak up with well-researched ideas. If you need to put forth an idea, be extremely clear about what’s going on in your mind. Your fresh perspective is an asset, not a liability. Use it to challenge the status quo - respectfully.

There is perhaps no more important mission in the gas markets than to expose young people to the nature and importance of energy security, natural gas' critical role in carbon emissions reduction, support for America's Allies around the globe for energy access, use of a native US resource to support a manufacturing renaissance here in the US...the list goes on.
