A recent post comparing food prices on Zomato versus at the restaurant has taken the Internet by storm. An X user shared a side-by-side comparison of a restaurant's bill with the prices for the same order on Zomato. Zomato noticed the viral post and responded on X, asking for the order ID!!! We all know that it takes money to run the app, pay the delivery boy and above all the company has to make the profits too ! The extra cost is essentially the price of comfort and convenience 💅. However, Zomato never marketed itself as a company offering comfort and convenience. Instead, it focused on enticing discounts like "60% off on your first order" or "₹200 off on your first order… Order NOW!" I've discussed this with multiple people, emphasizing that “Truth is good, but it does not work everywhere.” One of my favorite books puts it well: “The truth is often avoided because it is ugly and unpleasant. Imagine this: when an order gets canceled, nearby customers (within 3 km) can now snag it at a great price, still in its original packaging, and get it in just minutes! Here’s how it works: • Canceled orders will pop up on the app for a limited time, so you can grab them while they’re fresh. • Most types of food eligible, except items sensitive to time and temperature, like ice creams and smoothies. • The best part is Zomato won’t keep any money (aside from taxes). What you pay will be split between the original customer (if they paid online) and the restaurant. Restaurants also get their full payment for the initial order and a bonus if you claim it. • Delivery partners get compensated for the full trip, from the original pickup to your door. Exploring Zomato’s Pricing Strategy As a frequent Zomato user, I recently looked into the details of my bill. While reviewing the breakdown of items, discounts, and fees, I saw an unexpected charge for a simple feature—the “Veg Mode.” This feature, which I often use for the convenience of filtering out vegetarian options, is now being billed in addition to the standard platform fee. It was quite surprising atleast for me. Might be it is already known by the people around but ya I never checked the breakdown of my bills. Has anyone else noticed this? What are your thoughts on this ?

After spending time on the field to understand the challenges faced by Zomato's delivery personnel, I think it's time Mr. Deepinder Goyal took to the Zomato app to experience the customer side of the story. Maybe try raising a complaint on the app and see what a frustrating ordeal it has become. Cold food deliveries have become so frequent that many of us no longer bother complaining, out of consideration for the delivery partners. However, receiving completely wrong orders, special instructions being ignored by restaurants, and overburdened delivery personnel resulting in late and cold deliveries are simply unacceptable. Restaurants, on the other hand, face high commission fees, which leads to inflated prices on delivery menus. As customers, even with coupon codes and memberships, we often end up paying more than we would if we ordered directly from the restaurant. At the very least, we should expect satisfactory resolutions to serious complaints. No, not refunds or replacements but just actually ensuring that you don't repeat the same mistakes again. The promise you make to your customers every time they complain about their current order - "you have taken our feedback and will make sure this is not repeated". Only if you actually meant it. While I respect the CEO's efforts to build and sustain this platform through challenging times, there’s a real risk of a downturn if these issues aren’t addressed. I was shocked when Zomato went public. Did not even apply for the IPO. I couldn't have been more wrong. This is one company that is drilling down deeper into its niche. Look at this subtle update.
