Putting children and families first in Philadelphia means not forgetting about their furry family members. The neighborhoods surrounding the families we serve aren't the most environmentally equitable, which can impact the mental health of both individuals and groups. This is detrimental to someone's physical health, as we've discussed in-depth in the ACEs study thanks to Dr. Nadine Burke Harris. I'm grateful to be a part of the C.A.R.E Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity team and their holistic approach to their mission. The stats on how many animals are currently displaced and how many of them could be in loving homes is staggering. Allowing families to provide the love they have to offer to animals would be impactful to the mental health of children, families and communities. We know that our government and systems in place push for policies and legislation that don't benefit the communities we seek to transform. By shifting restrictions to housing animals and allowing organizations like CARE to support families with resources, we can sustain the well-being of both the animal and the family. While we work on challenging housing policies, human and animal well-being, and other inequities, we have the power to create neighborhoods that we all want to be a part of and live in. Neighborhoods that we would be comfortable and feel safe enough to walk our animals and raise our families. We have a rare opportunity here, not just for Philly but for other cities as well.
