So we have a new government and a new ministerial team at the DfE led by Secretary of State Bridget Phillipson. Wonderful news in my book and a long time coming after years of ideologically-driven (with cherry picked evidence) policy.
Reforming Ofsted (or OFSTEAD (sic)) will be on the agenda following a major loss of confidence in the inspection system in England after the tragic death of Ruth Perry.
Have a look at my piece here on why reform needs to run deep. We know that there is low hanging fruit here with the abolition of one word judgements. But that is just the start. Assuming we retain Ofsted and school inspections remain a big part of the landscape, we need to re-align how our schools are inspected and learn from other countries. It is perfectly possible to have an inspection regime which is hard-wired into a broader school improvement system. The previous government knew that but was happy with single bullet judgements which, egregiously in my book, were used as a one way door to academisation.
Our own research with current inspectors reveals a complex set of interactions under the surface of Ofsted and it is time this was allowed to surface rather than inspectors worried about crossing a line and actually supporting a school's improvement journey - heaven forfend!
