June marks Pride Month—a time to celebrate the 2SLGBTQ+ community, their identities and steadfast resilience. However, it also serves as a reminder that there is still much more to be done to ensure every 2SLGBTQ+individual feels included and can bring their whole selves to work. A 2022 study shows 2SLGBTQ+ groups feel less safe at work, with representation dropping from Director to Vice President levels. And while there is not a one-size-fits all rule for implementing a successful diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) program, prioritizing and addressing these issues leads to a better understanding of #DEI and the role it plays in hiring, recruiting, job retention, as well as higher trust, engagement, and job satisfaction. 🌈 🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈 With the start of the Pride Month and as a LGBTIQ+ Ally I want to take this opportunity to celebrate diversity, tolerance and inclusion. I strongly believe that diversity is a strength, and that different perspectives and experiences lead to innovation and growth. It is the responsibility of all of us to create an open and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and accepted. Pride Month gives us the opportunity to show our commitment to diversity and inclusion and to express our solidarity with the LGBTIQ+ community. By celebrating the Pride Month, I am making a statement for a world where everyone deserves equal opportunities and recognition. I am aware that dealing with the topic is not always easy, and the fear of making mistakes may prevent a lighthearted approach to the topic. My experience has shown that it is very helpful to have an open dialogue, clarify questions and actively seek feedback. In this way, I become more confident in dealing with sensitive topics, can learn from mistakes and maintain a more relaxed approach. And especially with sensitive topics, it's important to remember that words and their meanings are in a social and cultural context. Even if I didn't mean something intentionally offensive, certain words or statements can be harmful because of their historical or social connotations. Therefore I try to be aware of my language use and how my words may be perceived and being open to feedback to recognize where I failed and take this as opportunity to learn and grow. This is one step that will help us grow together into an appreciative, inclusive and tolerant community. April is Celebrate Diversity Month and Edelstein’s IDEA Council will be recognizing this through weekly trivia questions. The answer to last week's question is, A) Fostering an environment where individuals feel accepted and valued for their unique identities and contributions, promoting a sense of community and acceptance. This week's question is, What does the term "inclusion" mean in the context of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB)? A) Encouraging individuals to assimilate into the dominant culture to avoid conflicts and differences. B) Creating environments where individuals or groups feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued, regardless of their backgrounds or identities.
