Cutting-edge model isn't the key, instead, metadata is. Metadata is an enabler. It's a digital content, NOT a technology. It's like a treasure map, curated by human for treasure hunting. Without such map, NO technology can find the treasure. ❗️❗️ "..much of their work is to appease investors rather than to solve problems for end users, and that many projects are about effectively recreating products that competitors like OpenAI already offer" ❗️❗️ So many red flags there and I havent even good into Product Management perspective. If you're appeasing investors( even heard of a company that rhymes with "Boing" ) instead of what provides value to your customers or users is not a growth contributor. That just tells you those investors dont really understand AI and consider it equivalent to "Look busy" to maintain facade instead of actually tackling the market demand. ► Sustainable development is aligning product strategies with real-world applications that solve concrete problems. ► It’s crucial to listen to your product management & engineering teams and involve them in decision-making processes. Their insights are invaluable in distinguishing between what's merely innovative for the sake of innovative and what’s truly beneficial for users. ► Ignoring existing solutions to reinvent the wheel for investor appeal is not just inefficient; it can lead to significant burnout 😷 and disillusionment among the very people who are supposed to innovate. Aligning product development with genuine user needs is essential, not just window dressing for investor satisfaction. Totally agree with Jafri Khalid regarding training and reskilling. Without proper training and reskilling the full potential of GenAI may not be realized. Proper AI Rollout is extremely important for fully realizing AI ROI.

An important article to read. Ironically, just yesterday at the Community College Leaque of California Trustees meeting, I said one important policy question for trustees to ask is “to what problem is AI the solution?”. GenAI was thrust at us without desire or request and then we were told “we have to use/teach it because students are already using it”. Sometimes it feels like we’re hostages! Especially when we’re surrounded on social media by so many AI evangelists! Although in many ways I’m an advocate for using it (or at least using it as a reason to really pay attention to course/curriculum/assessment design, which we needed to anyway), I do believe we need to be wary of the hype and when/where we implement it, we role model doing so critically and with human-centric design principles. Articles like these and items written by Gary Marcus (even though they’re not focused on education) can help ground us. Yes, this can make us slower to react and HE gets mocked for that. But often our “slow” (aka deliberative, deep) thinking provides balance in the force.

Would We Have Stick Figures if AI Had Been Around? ↪️ My first thought when I read this article was about the software products I use, most of which have been urging me to try their new AI features. I have yet to use a single one. I try to be intentional when selecting a software tool, evaluating how well it fits my use case before jumping in. I’m open to the idea of AI, but the products I use are addressing my needs well & the rush into AI hasn’t added value. ↪️ My brain wandered next to thinking about the students who now want to “major in AI”. Students want to be part of what they perceive to be the next big thing. In the past, I’ve asked students who want to major in gaming whether they know what it’s like working under deadline to ship a flawless product hyped by pre-launch marketing that is feverishly anticipated by millions of fans. Being a passionate consumer of a product doesn’t necessarily translate to the experience of working in the industry. Likewise, for students who want to major in AI: Do they understand what it’s like working for a company rushing to hit aggressive product launch deadlines, or being responsible for making sure a core product is up 24/7? ↪️ I also wonder whether students who want to major in AI who are also passionate about climate change understand the immense amount of power required to run AI models. How do they reconcile that with reducing negative human impacts on the environment? ↪️ Our brains can make unexpected connections that are uniquely individual. At a basic level, generative AI models are trained to output an average. Who wants to be average? Art done “in the style of” is not valued as highly as originals. When we see examples of “amazing things generative AI wrote/created”, are they really that amazing in the context of uniquely human creativity? And what happens to our brains if we don’t allow them the freedom to make their own connections as often? ↪️ Eventually, my brain settled on the stick figure, frequently a symbol of non-creativity, and I remembered Benjamin Orlin ‘s delightful books. Would Math With Bad Drawings and its companions have been birthed with AI in the picture?
