Finally, I completed my course regarding wine on Udemy which provided me with extensive wine knowledge with some quizzes for every chapter. Finally, there is a quote that I got from C.S. Lewis that says, "The only people who achieve much are those who want knowledge". #foodandbeverageindustry #wineeducation

Youth, in the world of wine, is a sharp double-edge sword. Older people in general, especially men, are often simply assumed to be more knowledgeable about wines. When I first had a conversation in person with Sean Ou DipWSET, IWA, CSW, CSS, FWS, IWS, CS about my interest to teach at The Beverage Clique, he asked me why I was keen to teach. “I want to work with the younger generation and get them more interested in wines,” was my reply to him. I was referring to my little sister and the Gen Z wine drinkers, who are seemingly disinterested in wines. Fast forward a few months, my little sister did sign up for a WSET Level 2 in Wine class that I also taught. In these few months of teaching, my proudest teaching moment was when she told me that she: (voluntarily) went to NTUC FairPrice supermarket to browse the wine selection, knows that that Malbec is common and white Malbec not so, and that Haut-Médoc is generally Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot dominant. Ok she forgot about what Amarone is so we still have work to do. I do not subscribe to the belief that Gen Z have no interest in wines; but they do care about their health and couldn't care less for the wine snobbery. That's a discussion for another day. Play to your strengths instead of focusing on what you lack in all situations. #wineeducation #wset #wineteaching #wine

Wine & Spirits | DipWSET | WSET Level 2 in Spirits | International Sales & Business Development | Export Area Manager | Account Manager | Brand Manager | Brand Ambassador
I received a WSET Alumni email earlier today saying that 2024 saw a record number of Wine Diploma graduates. Great news if you ask me. However, there has been a lot of discussion here on LinkedIn lately regarding whether or not the wine business needs more WSET or otherwise wine-educated people. The point emphasized is that there is no lack of wine knowledge in the industry and that what the industry needs is not more educators, but more consumer understanding, more marketing and communication skills. I wholeheartedly agree that it's high time the wine business started taking marketing seriously and even prioritizing it at the same level as the product quality and state-of-the-artedness of the equipment. However, it does not seem right to oppose one over the other. People who come to WSET typically do not do it the first day after leaving secondary school with the idea of becoming wine educators. More often than not you see at any WSET (or other) course people who are professionals already in sales, marketing, and/or management. They come for more knowledge and a personal challenge. In any case, it cannot possibly hurt the industry to have its professionals educated about the subject of the industry. What do you think? #drinks #drinksindustry #wine #winebusiness #wineeducation #wset #dipwset

Why has the winery industry transformed into a snobbish industry? I discussed this with a friend recently, reflecting on how much we've both changed since entering the wine industry and how we conduct ourselves now. It seems the transformation wasn't unique to us; many others have changed similarly. We both acknowledged our past snobbishness, rigidly adhering to what we had learned and believed. We thought everyone drinking wine should follow these rules. My friend, coming from an education background, and I realized that many wine professionals, when starting out, tend to be snobbish, likely due to the many rules the wine industry teaches us to follow. This made me realize that our education system often prepares us to replicate knowledge rather than encourage innovation and problem-solving. How many of you have completed a wine course with dreams of teaching or simply replicating what you've learned? I've lost count of the professionals I know who want to open a wine school or a similar type of business involving educational masterclass events or becoming WSET educators. Some important questions arise: ✅Must everyone be formally educated before enjoying wine? ✅Do all customers want to learn how to taste or drink like wine professionals? I believe there's a niche for this, but it doesn't cater to everyone. Perhaps we're overlooking a significant opportunity because we're not listening to their needs and are too focused on our own bubble. David Stevens-Castro a.k.a DSC, once remarked to me that while our industry boasts many educators, perhaps it's time to incorporate more entertainment-oriented perspectives. Personally, I feel there's a lack of practical application in what I've studied. Less emphasis on rote memorization and more on problem-solving skills could be advantageous. Do you want to learn more about wine? 🍷 One of the easiest ways to build up your wine knowledge is to pick up a book on the subject and dive into it. Here’s what you should look for in books on wine: 📚Should be written by a wine expert: There are thousands of books on wine in the market, but choosing the wrong one can put you off the subject completely. This is why, choose books written by experts in the field. Check out the author’s credentials, and go through their social media and blogs, before buying their book. 📚Buy books that make learning fun: Wine can seem like an intimidating subject. So many styles, so many different regions, such complex processes… So, choose a book that makes wine look fun, easy, approachable and interesting. 📚Buy books based on how much you know, or don’t: If you are a beginner, buying a book meant for those with a certain knowledge of wines can be a mistake. Instead, choose books specially written for beginners, that’ll not only introduce readers to wine and its different styles but also explain elementary topics like wine terminology, the winemaking process, wine storage, wine etiquette etc. Tell us about your favourite book on wine in the comments section.💬 #sonalholland #sonalhollandwineacademy #wineeducation #winebooks #wineknowledge #learnwine #winetime
