Zurich Community Trust's London Volunteer and Programme Manager, Lisa Walsh, had a busy week helping a group of Zurich UK work experience students feel at home. The students, from schools in London and Clacton-On-Sea, all enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about each area of the UK business, and even a quiz and quick tour of the City! The students spoke to everyone from finance and actuarial, to legacy, public affairs and marketing and of course ZCT. Thanks to all who volunteered and made this programme possible.

Celebrating Social Mobility Day and #SharingMoments Today is Social Mobility Day, and it's a day that resonates with me. I grew up in one of the "rough" areas of Swindon, and attended a standard state school. I did ok in my GCSEs but nothing special and university was a pipedream for someone like me. Watching my parents struggle for money for my entire childhood and making sacrifices meant that in my mind a student loan was an absolute non-starter! The college I attended was in Cirencester, the Cotswolds, and was very "posh" compared to what I was used to. I felt out of place, inadequate and less than. Towards the end of my first year, my parents split up and I dropped out of college achieving only my AS-levels. After dropping out of college to help my mum with the mortgage and bills, I was working in retail and didn't really set my sights anywhere else. I moved, with friends, to Cleethorpes on the N.E coast. I took an agency job at a small building society in Grimsby. The financial crash of 2008, horrid for many, was a positive turning point for me. Nationwide rescued the little building society I was working at and provided me a chance to move back to Swindon and be part of a larger organisation with more opportunities for movement. After many secondments, transfers and a few promotions, I left Nationwide 16 years later. My time there was nothing short of transformational. I learned and experienced so much. They sponsored me with my Level 5 CIPD qualification, something Id never have thought achievable after dropping out of education all those years before. Now, I'm living my dream, working in Diversity & Inclusion, where I can help others unlock their potential. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to overcome less than favourable circumstances, and I want to be a role model for young people who might not see a path beyond their current situation. I am also starting a mentor volunteer role with the Early Careers Foundation! #SocialMobilityDay #BreakingBarriers #ShareMoments #PotentialNotPolish #DiversityAndInclusion #Nationwide

Barriers to college and career success can be so high for undocumented students nationwide. As more and more Scholars without DACA or TPS join our program, these barriers are becoming even more apparent. However, there are paths to career success that our undocumented professionals can take, like entrepreneurship, that help them build a successful future. We are committed to not only helping students through their college experience but giving them the skills and support they need to thrive. https://lnkd.in/g5FDDB22

You're welcome, Jessica! I do like the idea of employees earning DEIB hours akin to professional development hours. But that requires organizational leadership that values and is committed to DEI. #DEI #DEIB #DiversityEquityInclusion #Management #Leadership
Thank you, Erwin de Leon, PhD, for sharing this insightful article on shifting #Diversity, #Equity, #Inclusion, and #Belonging (#DEIB) from mere box-checking to genuine mindset building. One of the ideas is having employees earn DEIB hours, much like professional development hours. This approach emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and engagement in DEIB efforts, helping integrate DEIB into our daily operations and ensuring that everyone contributes to a #DEIB culture. #MindsetShift #ProfessionalDevelopment #workplace #nonprofit #DEI #peopleandculture

Independent Financial Planning + Wealth Management for Foreign-Born Individuals & Foreign Nationals on Work Visas I 🎙️ Host of The International Money Cafe Podcast
Last week, my youngest graduated high school. A couple of the kids spoke at the ceremony - they had some great speeches. One line from one of the speakers caught my attention; in essence, here is what she said. ...As a first-generation kid, it's been a challenge to grow and deepen my roots in what I now consider my home. This experience makes me appreciate even more what my immigrant parents have been through, leaving their lives in their home countries to come to the US so I could have this opportunity. Thank you!... My takeaway - this is a kid who has been taught and deeply understands her family values. She is also very appreciative and grateful for what she has and won't take anything for granted. She has what I call the "immigrant mindset" and will most likely succeed in whatever she chooses to do. If you are a parent - don't be afraid to pass on your values to your kids, which, by extension, includes your money values. It's one way of passing on generational wealth. They may look like they are not paying attention, but they are -: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow me or join my FREE newsletter (link in profile) for more tips on financial planning issues affecting foreign-born (immigrants) individuals and foreign nationals on work visas.
