As healthcare continues to push into digital spaces, and bright start-ups are changing the way healthcare will be delivered, how are we ensuring patients are ready for this transformation? Digital Determinants of Health (DDoH) play a pivotal role in how patients are able to access healthcare and thereby health. Via generous support of the Noaber Foundation, we investigated how digital access and literacy are key components to patient ability and willingness to utilize electronic medical portals. The Digital Health and AI era have mission-critical common denominators: #Data and #Information. Under Tim Murphy's leadership, the Health and Data Interoperability Working Group highlighted the need for different technology systems and software to communicate and exchange information effectively. This seamless sharing of data is crucial for improving patient care because it provides stakeholders with more comprehensive and up-to-date medical information. It's a no-brainer that achieving interoperability will significantly enhance the efficiency and quality of healthcare services. My team and I are acutely aware of the complex landscape of healthcare data systems in Canada, where large, multinational corporations often dominate with closed-end systems. This presents a significant challenge in terms of data interoperability, creating barriers for health technology platforms like ours to seamlessly share medical data. 💡In my startup journey, the necessity to pivot from an HR-led system to a Healthcare-based technology was mission-critical. 🚨We couldn't overlook our responsibility in the data chain of custody - Mental Health patient data such as #feelings, #emotions, and #symptoms, must be corroborated with medical data to support the change of diagnosis for mild to moderate cases of mental illnesses. 🚨 As such, our pivot created the need for complete redesign of our tech: 🫂❤️🩹 Human needs remained at the center of all our decisions and we doubled down on #collectivehealing, #collectiveintelligence, #collectiveapproach 👮🏾♂️🔐 We fathom the importance of fostering #trust and are working towards #HIPAA, #PIPEDA, #SOC2 as we understand our stewardship position . 🧬👨🏾💻 Compliance does not equate to secured! #Security #Privacy #Confidentiality is also a thought process natively built into the DNA of any software or application. You either build with consideration or you don't. Our approach is to address these challenges head-on, ensuring the ethical protection and privacy of patient information while creating bridges for stakeholders to access key information under strict rules that are patient-driven. By focusing on collaborative efforts and seeking legislative and standard changes that promote a patient-centric health data ecosystem, we aim to play a pivotal role in enhancing healthcare delivery while offloading the system. I am excited to share our Vizient findings of studying healthcare top performance for the past two decades. This post shares strategies for how healthcare organizations should think about high performance.

Canada's healthcare data systems are significantly influenced by large, multinational corporations. These entities predominantly use closed-end systems, creating barriers that prevent other health technology platforms from seamlessly sharing medical data. This vendor-centric approach not only causes data fragmentation but also severely hampers innovation in our healthcare sector. This statement isn't intended as a criticism of any individual or company, but as a call to reassess why we allow our data to be confined in a way that negatively impacts our health, safety, and well-being. We find ourselves at a critical juncture, offering an opportunity to adopt a more collaborative approach that transcends the limited responsibilities of individual institutions. This collective action is essential and the most effective method for advancing the availability of quality medical information, which is crucial for delivering better healthcare to all Canadians. The smooth exchange of patient information across different digital platforms is crucial for efficient and effective healthcare delivery. Our healthcare systems need to evolve to prioritize our patient and healthcare provider's needs. I encourage innovators, policymakers, and advocates to support legislative and standard changes that promote a patient-centric health data ecosystem. Engaging with the insights and recommendations in the 'Interoperability Saves Lives' report is a key step in this journey. The report is shared here for broader education and understanding. We need to move towards a more integrated, inclusive, and equitable healthcare system. It is our collectively responsibility to ensure that we bring this vision to life. Streamlining health data and workflow, and the lack of standards for interoperability impacts the safety of people and systems. ISM helped a #startup begin tackling this issue in #BC by building a #prototype of a first-of-its-kind digital platform that can seamlessly standardize and connect essential health information and stakeholders using modern technology -- it can not only be convenient and equitable but can sometimes make the difference between whether a life gets saved. It is reassuring to see recent big strides being taken in #Alberta to address this as well.

Payers are facing unprecedented increases in medical costs with the increasing cost of pharmaceuticals like #GLP1s, inflation, and clinical workforce shortages exerting pressure on health care, according to PwC. Amidst this landscape, let's look at the economic benefits of patient education. Our latest #ResearchwithPillar highlights a study by Oslo University Hospital assessing the economic impact of patient education interventions for individuals managing chronic illnesses. 🔻 The study comprised a systematic review of patient education literature from 2000-2016 with a total of 18,201 participants in Europe and North America with diagnoses including COPD, asthma, chronic pain, heart disease, and diabetes. Key findings are as follows: ➡️ The most widely used health economic evaluations of patient education interventions in the reviewed studies included: • Losses in Productivity: days on sick leave • Quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) • Hospitalizations: average length of stay, readmission, • Emergency Department Visits • General Practitioner (GP) consultations • Direct and indirect healthcare costs: informal care, medical costs 🗨️ "More than 80% of the studies reviewed found positive impact or effects of patient education interventions as measured by one or several health economic outcomes. Health care organizations measure costs for business operations but do not routinely incorporate costs in decision-making on the value of care. In this latest article, we provide guidance on how to use costs in Value-Based Health Care delivery at different levels of the health care system.
