You know what's the biggest challenge in building humane and sustainable cities today? It's not coming up with new solutions and concepts. It's applying what we already know. Most of what is being built today doesn't even meet the criteria described in comprehensive approaches like soft city or biophilic design. Both science and centuries of experience give us tons of good knowledge to apply. But we're not using it to build cities today. Recent insights on measuring Resident Experience were clarified by The Lessons of History by Will and Ariel Durant. Progress is defined as the increased ability of life to control its environment. Applied to urban design, this means assessing how well an environment allows residents to manage their lives. High housing costs and car-dependent designs limit control over life conditions, while walkable, well-designed environments enhance it. Thus, despite advances in various fields, the US has regressed in housing and transportation, affecting overall quality of life.
