Great opportunity in translational research

🔎 Reflective/Personal Post ahead: In 2011, I was diagnosed with Relapse Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS). Although I already had an affinity for the sciences, this diagnosis became my main catalyst to pursue the biomedical research field (even as a high schooler). Every move I made after the day at Boston Children's Hospital, where I was diagnosed, was strategic: high school summer programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, college summer research internships at the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a post-bac at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill—leading to my PhD in Neuroscience at Emory University Laney Graduate School. As an MS patient, I’m in constant awe of the advancements in treatments. I went from daily self-administered injections (Copaxone-Teva Pharmaceuticals) to twice daily oral pills (Tecfidera, now Vumerity-Biogen) to monthly infusions (Tysabri- Biogen) to now biannual infusion therapy (BRIUMVI- TG Therapeutics, Inc.) I know my quality of life is significantly better than MS patients 30-35 years ago. I am extremely grateful to the scientists who decided to take a chance, forming companies that started small and are now global pharma giants. At Radyus Research, I’m incredibly proud to work for a company that supports small and midsize biotechs as they advance their drug programs. We’re truly helping shape the future of therapeutics and impacting lives. I hope one day, maybe in another 30-35 years, we will find a cure for MS (along with other autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases). Who knows? 2023 was another strong year for the life sciences ecosystem in North Carolina, as noted by the North Carolina Biotechnology Center (NCBiotech). Here are a few highlights of how the Research Triangle Region contributed to the growth of this industry last year: - Eli Lilly and Company, Indivior, and Mazen Animal Health - Oral Vaccines announced over $500M in investments alone, bringing more than 135 new jobs to the region. - 129 students enrolled in BioWork, a certificate program that prepares students for jobs in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. - A biologics manufacturing training center in Wilson and a life sciences training center for Durham Technical Community College received $70M+ in funding to further develop the region's strong workforce. - Brookings Metro Monitor 2023 ranked Raleigh-Cary as the No. 4 best economic-performing metro in the country and LendingTree ranked Raleigh first and Durham third as the best metros in the nation to start a business. Joining a CRO is the end of your scientific career. The question remains: is it truly the reality? Completing your master's or PhD and pondering the next move? Perhaps it's a viable option after all, with several reasons to consider: 1. CROs collaborate with a diverse array of biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies across various fields, including immunology, oncology, and neurodegenerative diseases. This exposure allows you to explore different areas and discover your passion. 2. Working in CRO is like an accelerated PhD program. Through multiple projects and tight deadlines, you'll develop not only laboratory techniques but also strong organizational and time management skills essential to success. 3. Expect to tackle challenging projects that demand innovative problem-solving. This experience will deepen your expertise and broaden your skill set within your field. 4. Finally, there's a common belief that once you depart academia, there's no return. I'm a living example that opportunities exist, even if you transition to industry after completing your PhD. Yet… as it was in my case, I found that working in the industry was a better fit, proving that flexibility and options are always available. I am happy to share that my review article, "Applying Quantitative and Systems Pharmacology to Drug Development and Beyond: An Introduction for Clinical Pharmacologists," has been published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology (IJP)! Quantitative and Systems Pharmacology (QSP) is a cutting-edge, integrative approach that combines systems biology and pharmacology to accelerate medical research. This review explores QSP’s pivotal role in drug development and its broader applications, introducing clinical pharmacologists and researchers to the power of QSP’s quantitative methodologies. QSP enhances decision-making through robust mathematical models that predict clinical outcomes, optimize dosing, and evaluate combination therapies. QSP has transformed fields such as oncology, autoimmune diseases, and HIV treatment. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Rukmini Kumar , the corresponding author for the publication , CEO of Vantage Research and Bhairav Paleja for their invaluable contributions to this publication. One of the mistakes I often see STEM PhDs make in their industry job search is to overfocus on getting into a "Top 5" company. These companies are incredibly difficult to enter because they often have 1000s of applicants for every job opening. But working in a Top 5 company isn't the only way to have impact. Often smaller companies and startups are actually the ones driving innovation. And they also often strategically partner with the larger companies for investment. It's a great way to get a foot in the door. So, before you commit your job search to the "Top 5", consider searching out some of the innovators and disruptors - you won't be disappointed.
