2023 was the year of tech industry layoffs, however thanks to the ‘’AI Arms race’, 2024 could see a hiring upswing in the tech space as the skills of future grow in demand. Meta announces that they are expecting headcount to be ‘meaningfully higher than last year’. It will be interesting to see if there is a knock effect across our region… my money says yes. Most big businesses are wanting to develop their own tech or wanting to be more like a tech firm (particularly when valuations are considered). Here's the deal. We're adding an experienced full stack engineer to the team. This is a crazy opportunity for the right person. Speaking from over 15 years of industry experience as a software engineer, this is a rare opportunity. The basics are already great: - Remote async. - 4 day work week. - Incredible world class team. (sincerely, best I've ever been a part of) - Working on and in AI - Applied to a real proven use case. - Incredible investors who are active users and promoters of the product. - Incredible customers who love and promote the product. "Magical" and "life saver" are words we hear often. - We ship fast. Many times a day. - AND we love our craft. That all aside, what's truly rare is when you consider the moment in time you are joining this company: We are a seed stage company showing early product market fit. Which means: - You are joining a rocket just leaving the launch pad. - We have real paying customers. And more of them every day. - We did 2 years of talking to customers and pouring all that learning into iteration and FINALLY things are really clicking. In other words, things are starting to get really fun and exciting around here. I'm gonna be honest. The bar for this role is super high. You have to bring: - Full Stack competency with attention to detail. We need someone ready to hit the ground running and ship full features including pixels, APIs, queries and schemas. - A "senior"+ level of experience. We will hire more junior roles in the future but if you aren't a seasoned pro, with 7+ years under your belt, we're not ready for you yet. - Seed stage fire/hunger. This stage of company can be chaotic and demanding. The hours are NOT crazy but the intensity and focus is! - Extreme ownership. No one is gonna dictate exactly what you need to do. You need to understand and take ownership over more than just tickets and projects. You have to take ownership over understanding our customers problems, solving those problems and scaling the business. Seeing that there are career opportunities for a company such as HoYoverse is interesting. I'm assuming that most of the company's openings are meant to be in-person jobs either in Singapore or in the United States. But, the question becomes, does HoYoverse ever offer opportunities to work remotely? What about part-time? This inquiring mind would like to know how the process works. A short synopsis/summary of the process. Not just a link to a web site. Hmm, maybe I'm hoping for too much? 🤔

The contrast between hiring for startups and game studios is striking. While startups prioritize speed and agility in the hiring process, game studios often have a more traditional, lengthy approach. It's clear that there's room for improvement in streamlining the hiring process within the gaming industry. It shouldn't take 4 months and 6 rounds to hire someone.

Some thoughts on the transition from SWE to technical founder: As someone who learns best by doing, working on a greenfield opportunity has taught me more about engineering and management than working on incremental improvements in an established system or business. That being said, having solid foundations and learning best practices is crucial for making informed decisions. Cross-functional communication is critical: I primarily worked with other engineers or product managers as a software engineer. These days, I interface with operations, sales, and marketing as much as I do with product and engineering. It's important to figure out what's important to each function and communicate with each teammate at the right level of detail. YMMV as the team composition at every startup is different, depending on the stage and how technical the product is. You have to be willing to do more than just the technical stuff. Early-stage startups are notoriously under-resourced and Skye is no exception - at times it feels as if I moonlight as an engineer in addition to tackling customer success, hiring, strategy, and user interviews.
