10 Safety Tips for Secure Mobile Banking

With the advent of the internet and smartphones, banking has evolved into a seamless experience accessible from virtually anywhere. The digital age has ushered in mobile banking, providing unparalleled convenience for managing finances. However, with this convenience comes the imperative of safeguarding our mobile banking interactions to ensure security and peace of mind.

Here are ten essential tips to fortify the security of your personal and financial information while embracing the convenience of mobile banking:

  1.  Use Strong Passwords

Choose a complex password combination that includes a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols. This makes it harder for cyber attackers and software to guess your password. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays, pet names, or simple sequences like '1234'. The stronger your password, the more secure your account will be.’

2.     Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your account. It requires not just something you know (your password), but also something you have (like your phone or a security token) to access your account. This way, even if someone manages to guess your password, they won't be able to access your account without the second factor. From email to banking to accessing your online grocery order and social media accounts, two-factor authentication is becoming a standard practice for securing your online life.

3.     Update Your Apps Regularly

Keeping your banking app updated to the latest version is crucial as it ensures you have the most recent security updates and patches. Developers often release updates to fix bugs and vulnerabilities, so don't ignore those update notifications. And easy way to do this is have the ‘Update Apps Automatically’ feature on your phone turned on so anytime a new update is released, the app will automatically download and install it.

4.     Use Secure Networks

Public Wi-Fi networks are often not secure, making them a high-risk environment for mobile banking. Instead, use a secure and private internet connection whenever possible. If you must use a public network, consider using a reliable VPN.

5.     Don’t Share Your Information

Keep your banking details confidential, including your password and account number. Never share them with anyone, even if they claim to represent your bank. Legitimate banking institutions would never request such information over the phone, email, or text. Additionally, avoid storing your passwords and banking information in a digital notepad on your phone, as it can be accessed by unauthorized individuals.

6.     Beware of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams often involve unsolicited emails or text messages asking for your banking details. Be cautious and always verify the source before providing any information. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. At any given time, there are several text and email scams in the works. If you’re ever in doubt after receiving what appears to be a legitimate communication from your bank, it’s always best to double check by calling the bank.

7.     Use Biometric Security Features

If your device allows (and most now do), use biometric features like fingerprint or face recognition for added security. These features are unique to you, making it harder for others to gain unauthorized access to your account. These settings can usually be found under ‘privacy’ settings in your phone or device.

8.     Monitor Your Accounts Regularly

Regularly check your accounts for any unauthorized transactions or suspicious activity. If you see something unusual, report it to your bank immediately. Early detection can limit the damage caused by any potential breach.

9.     Logout After Use

Don't just close your banking app, ensure you log out after each use. Leaving your session open can potentially allow unauthorized users to access your account if they get hold of your device. While almost all banking apps will log you out automatically after a set amount of time, it’s still important that you log out manually every time you use your account.

10.  Report Lost or Stolen Devices

If your device is lost or stolen, it's essential to notify your bank promptly or update your login credentials from another device, such as a laptop. This enables them to take necessary actions, such as temporarily locking your account or modifying your login details. Additionally, some banks may have the ability to remove login access on the lost or stolen device.

By following these tips, you can enhance the security of your mobile banking experience, giving you peace of mind while enjoying the convenience it offers.
