In any business setting you are going to have particular leaders, each with their own set of strengths and weaknesses; which hopefully together create a nurturing environment for a business. However, of this "leadership" team, seldom do you find a strategic leader. Glenn W. Rowe of Ivey Business Journal puts this perfectly. In his 2009 article, Strategic Leadership: Short-Term Stability and Long-Term Viability, he states that,

"Rare is the business leader who can articulate and instill a long-term vision and manage the day-to-day operations with the requisite obsession for detail. A leader who combines both styles is what these authors call a “strategic leader,” someone who, more than any other type of leader is best equipped to increase shareholder value.

Yes, it is very hard to find a leader that can be efficient both with the long term vision (big picture) and the day to day. However, it is not impossible. Being one of these individuals, I know what it takes to be successful at it. My explanation to what characteristics make a "great" strategic leader might surprise you thought. Below are what I believe to be the top five (5) characteristics that make a great strategic leader.

1. They must have Attention Deficient Disorder (ADD) - I'm not kidding.

2. They must have a knack for seeing, developing and implementing efficiencies

3. They must be able to break down even the most complex situations into the remedial parts

4. They must think 5 layers deep (the most important)

5. They must be able to quantify, exploit and nurture the strengths of those around them

I could write a book about how these five (5) characteristics are essential to a strategic leader but for the sake of this discussion I won't go into great detail about them.

In my opinion, every business should have at least one strategic leader at the C-level. This individual will be able to take the little pieces of the business and make sense of them on the large scale; while not loosing site of both how the day to day effects the big picture and how the big picture effects the day to day. This is the only way to truly ensure the long term success of any business.
