2nd International Adhesive and Sealant Day

This year, the International Adhesive and Sealant Day  will be held on September 29th for the second time to draw attention to their important role in our economy and in society.

⚗️ History of adhesives ⚗️

Humans have been utilising the positive properties of #adhesives for thousands of years. The simple adhesives used at the beginning, such as pitch, wax, #resin or tar, were used to build weapons, tools or dwellings.

Over the centuries, progress led to the development of other adhesives that were used in a wide variety of #applications. One example of this is the #glue, which was used to bind books.

Despite the increased demand for #products such as wood glue and paste, adhesives hardly developed any further in the following period. There were no significant innovations or changes that would have led to new areas of application for this bonding technology.

This situation changed towards the end of the 19th century. The increasing demand for a wide variety of goods in the wake of rapid #industrial progress also accelerated the development of #adhesive #production technology. Due to the emergence of mass production, the previous products no longer met the increased quality requirements.

New, modern alternatives therefore had to be developed to meet the demands of industry.

Numerous scientists from various disciplines, such as #chemistry and physics, subsequently began intensive research to develop more effective adhesives.

🧪 Modern adhesives 🧪

This research led to the development of new adhesives based on synthetically produced raw materials. Synthetic resins were the starting point for increasingly high-performance products. Examples of modern adhesives are #epoxy resins, #polyurethanes, #silicones, MS polymers, #cyanoacrylates and anaerobic adhesives.

These products were manufactured from the 1960s onwards and have been an integral part of many areas of industry and modern life ever since.

Adhesives can be used wherever production, #repair and #maintenance is carried out. For example, in #metalworking, #toolmaking and #mechanical engineering, in the oil and gas industry, in the plastics and rubber industry, in the solar and wind energy sector, in the paper industry, in optics and precision mechanics, in #automotive engineering, in #aircraft #construction or in the manufacture of smartphones.

Today's products would be unimaginable without modern adhesives. These adhesives enable lighter and more stable construction, for example.
