The 3 Keys To Success In Sales

The 3 Keys To Success In Sales

I worked for a door to door sales company in 2008 that was like going to college with a major in sales. You didn't earn much, but you learned A LOT. Their training was centered around the 4 impulse factors, the 5 steps to the sale, the 5 types of buyers, and 8 great work habits. Man, 8 felt like a lot of work habits to learn. When I left the company I boiled those 8 habits down to 3 and I've been teaching them to salespeople ever since. I call them the 3 keys to success, and I believe if you're ever struggling in sales it's almost always due to you struggling with one or more of these keys.

  1. Have And Maintain A Positive Attitude: I learned this key while doing door to door sales, where it was common for you to get cursed out, get chased out of businesses, or worse. I learned that what happens at one business can't carry over to the next one, because that next one might be the best chance at a sale I'd get all day. Being positive doesn't mean being overly ecstatic or fake, it means keeping an even, positive outlook throughout the day. No super high highs, no super low lows.
  2. Have And Apply Student Mentality: Having a student mentality means always looking to add more to your game. You should always be looking to find an edge by learning as much as you can from as many sources as you can. A huge part of student mentality is actually applying what you've learned. Plenty of people have shelves full of books that they read, but haven't applied the knowledge whatsoever. If you don't turn what you learn into a habit, you might as well have never learned it at all. Finally, it's important to consider the source when learning new things. If someone offers you advice and they're struggling to hit their target, take that information to one of the heavy hitters in your company and ask them if they apply it as well. If they don't, I'd reconsider turning that advice into a habit.
  3. Have And Maintain A Great Work Ethic: This is my favorite key to success because skill has nothing to do with it. You don't have to be the smartest, or the most charismatic, or the most charming, or the most convincing to have work ethic... Anyone can be the best at working hard. If your company has activity metrics, find out who is at the top of the board in activity (dials, businesses seen, demos performers, whatever activity metrics matter to your company) and stop at nothing to become #1 in every activity category.

I could cover a lot more on each of these keys and probably will in articles in the near future, but I thought it would be a helpful topic to start off the new year. If you want more insight or information on any of this, don't be shy! Feel free to reach out and DM me or email me at troycbarter@gmail.com

Thank you for your post. Always good content. Great way to start the year for new reps and seasoned ones alike.
