The 4 Things You Never Want To Say On Video

The 4 Things You Never Want To Say On Video

Most of the time, I work with clients to come up with great video content and help them with what to say on video.

It means I watch an awful lot of video content! I thought it might be useful to share with you a few things I recommend that you DON’T say when you are scripting you videos.

Don’t Put Your Audience In Groups

Don’t group people! You want the person watching your video to feel like you’re speaking directly to them. You don’t want them to think you’re plonking them in to a group, let alone one they don’t associate themselves with!

Avoid saying:

  • “Hi my friends”
  • “Hello folks”
  • “Morning everyone”
  • “Just checking in with my tribe”

Write your video script for just one special person. Think about your ideal customer and speak directly to them.

When you’re saying hello, say it like you would if you were talking to an individual person in the room.

Don’t Be Too Busy

Don’t be one of those annoying people who seem like they never have time for their audience. I bet you have seen quite a few videos from these people!

Avoid saying:

  • “Hi there, I’ve recorded a really quick message for you”
  • “Wow, I’ve just got time to quickly tell you something you need to know”
  • “Listen, I don’t have long, but I wanted to let you know something important”
  • “Hey, I have just jumped online to share this with you”

The key to video success is your audience believing that you have all the time in the world for them and that you totally understand their needs and problems.

Don’t Make Your Videos All About You

This is a really common mistake and so easy to avoid. Ego videos are a waste of time!

If you are shooting a video to share something exciting, concentrate on the benefits that your audience can get out of your offer – not explain how you feel about it!

Avoid saying:

  • “Wow, I am just so excited to share this new offer”
  • “I had to let you know about this! I am so blown away by how amazing my new deal is”
  • “I am so thrilled I can now share with you what I’ve been doing”

Who cares? Not your clients!

They care about how your brand or business is going to benefit them.

Don’t Be A Video Cliche

There are some video scripts that sound a bit cliched these days. I think these people got their script advice from a HubSpot 2018 blog and have stuck to it ever since!

Make sure you don’t start your scripts with an outdated cliché greeting.

Avoid saying:

  • “So many people are asking me…” – we know they haven’t been!
  • “So many customers have contacted me to thank me” – have they really?
  • “So many happy clients shared with me” – how many exactly?

Hope this has given you a laugh and helped you with your video scripts chats this week!

If you’re guilty of some of these, don’t worry. Start fresh now and make your future videos winners!

If you’re writing a script, make sure you use an autocue app – read my blog to learn all about them here.
